Scutellum punctured. Abdomen moderately densely and finely punctured, more so at apical half of tergites, with fine semi-decumbent setae, with slight metallic reflexion. Legs long, with spines on tibiae. Length 10 mm. Holotype 5 unique, Romad 27.10.1974 (R. Hornabrook). Philonthus coetus sp.n. This species can be compared with P. bicoloratus Cam., and P. buanaensls Last, from the former it differs by having the pronotum black and the elytra red, which is the reverse of bicolo ratus; the antennae are black with the exception of the last two segments which are creamy-white, in bicoloratus the basal three segments are red, and the last three creamy-white, the abdomen is irredescent red-black and a little more densely punctured, the tarsi are shorter, and the aedeagus is different, with the median lobe not so strongly curved, and with the paramere longer, distinctly laterally curved, and with a different arrangement of the "pegs" on the inner face of the paramere (Figs. 10 and 10A). P. buanaensis is almost entirely black; the tarsi and mouth-parts are reddish, and the last three segments of the antennae are creamy-white and the tarsi are longer; there is also a difference in the shape and arrangement of "pegs" on the paramere. In all these species the heads of the maleB are large and rectangular, reminiscent of the Belonuchus genus. Head transverse (5:4), shining, with very fine microsculpture, with a few large punctures each with a strong bristle, the two largest punctures near basal third often with two bristles; eyes not very convex, their longitudinal diameter a little shorter than the length of the temples which are parallel-sided and have porrect bristles; head rectangular with a large depression between the base of the antennae in the male; antennae with second segment shorter than the third, both shorter than the first, segments four to six shorter, but longer than broad, seven to ten quadrate, last segment almost as long as the two penultimate together, setose especially on basal segments. Pronotum about as broad as long, not very shining due to a fine but distinct alutaceous diagonal microsculpture towards the median area; with five large punctures in the two pronotal rows, and with a few further punctures laterally with strong outstanding bristles; anterior corners distinct, posterior corners more rounded and narrowly bordered for po.-.terior third; parallel-sided for most of its length. Elytra as broad as long, shining, moderately densely punctured, without microsculpture, with short setae and lateral bristles, strongly bordered at suture, almost parallel-sided. Scutellum very densely punctured. Abdomen finely, but not densely punctured with fine bristles, narrowing towards the apex. Legs spinose, short, especially the tarsi, the first segment of the posterior pair, rather broad and not longer than the three following together. Length 6-7 mm. Type S Musa 19.8.1975 (at light), paratype 6 1 same data (R. Hornabrook). Philonthus finitoris sp.n. This species can be compared with P. discoideus Grav. (cosmopolitan), as the elytra are black with the posterior and suturai margins yellow-red as in that species; it differs by the shape of the head, the darker antennae, the less dense puncturation of the tergites and the paramere, which is bifed in discoideus (Figs. 11 — IIA). Head, pronotum and abdomen black, the latter slightly irridescent; antennae black except last two segments which are reddish, elytra black, but broadly red along anterior margin including humeral corners and narrowly along deflexed lateral margins, suture narrowly red, posterior margins broadly red, broader than In discoideus. Head broader than long (4.25:3.25), shining, with a few large punctures near the eyes and on the temples, with extremely fine microsculpture; eyes not very convex, their longitudinal diameter a little longer than the temples from which two or three rather long slender bristles extend; basal three segments of antennae longer than broad, the second a little shorter than the third, both shorter than the first, segments four to six quadrate, seven to ten slightly transverse, last segment a little longer than the penultimate, asymmetrically acuminate. Pronotum as broad as long, with fine alutaceaus microsculpture, with two rows of five large punctures, and others laterally, with rather long bristles; anterior corners distinct, posterior corners rounded and with a very narrow border extending laterally for posterior third; almost parallel-sided. Elytra as broad as long, shining, moderately strongly and densely punctured, but interstices broader than diameter of punctures, without microsculpture, with semidecumbent pubescence and lateral bristles, a little broader at posterior margins. Scutellum densely punctured. Abdomen moderately densely and
