About 2 km NW Maktar, 3 April, 1977. Berlese sample from litter and decaying bases of Thymus sp. ; leg. S. Mahunka. Rafas gen. n. Peritremal shields (Fig. 1) extend posteriorly, especially lateral external ends which reach up to seta R3 and are similar to their shields in genus Mesozercon Btasz%k, 1975, but differ from their homologues in Prozercon Sellnick, 1943 in which peritremal shield reach to setae R5. Peritremal shield with two setae pi and p2, both short and smooth. They are similar to pi and p2 in Prozercon Sellnick, 1943 and Mesozercon Blaszak, 19 75. In Rafas gen. n. gland gv2 is absent as in genus Prozercon Sellnick, 1943, but in similar genus Mesozercon Blaszak, 1975, this gland is present. The feature distinguishing Rafas gen. n. from all known genera of Zerconidae is the completely divided sternal shield. Anterior part with one pair of setae (SI) and posterior part with two pairs of setae (S2-S3). Anterior margin of ventro-anal shield with two setae, similar to Prozercon Sellnick, 1943, whereas in genus Mesozercon Blaszak, 1975 on anterior margin of ventro-anal shield four setae present. Opisthonotum bearing 7 marginal setae similar to genus Mesozercon Blaszak, 1975, whereas in genus Prozercon Sellnick, 1943, there are 8 marginal setae. Type-species: Rafas bisternalis sp.n. Diagnosis: Peritremal shields extend posteriorly especially their lateral ends which reach to seta R3. Peritremal shield with two setae pi and p2, both short and smooth. Adgenital shields and single openings of glands gv2 absent. Sternal shield completely divided into two parts, anterior with one pair of setae, posterior with two pairs of setae. Margin of opisthonotum with 7 setae. Anterior margin of ventro-anal shield with two setae. Rafas bisternalis sp.n. Description of holotype. Female. Length 325 |im, width 240 jjm, Dorsal side (Fig. 2). Setae: On podonotum setae il-i2, rl, r4-r7 plumose, r2-r3 delicately plumose. Seta i5 phylliform and smooth. Remaining setae (i3-i4,i6, sl-s5, zl-z2) also phylliform with delicately serrated margin. Opisthonotal setae S2, S4, Z5 and 16 plumose. Setae 11-15, Z1-Z4, SI and S3 phylliform with serrated margin. Apices of setae 11-12 reaching insertion of next setae. Seta S3 reaching insertion of seta S4. Setae 16 removed 60 fim from each other. Distance between seta Z5 and 16 30 jim, Seta SI reaching insertion of seta Z2. In marginal row of setae of opisthonotum, setae R2-R7 short and smooth. Seta Rl longer and delicately plumose. *In honour of the my Teacher Prof. Dr. J. RAFALSKI.
