FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK (SERIES NOVA) XXXI. 2 1978 P- 191-200 Tarsonemid mites associated with birds in the USA (Acarina: Tarsonemida) By S. MAHUNKA and J. R. PHILIPS (Received November 17, 1977) Abstract: Investigation of Tarsonemid mites deriving from owl and eagle nests, and pellets, and from a beetle (Trox variolatus Mels. ) inhabiting owl nests, all collected from the state of New York, USA. Eight species have been identified of which six proved to be new for science: Pygmephorellus pinguisetus sp. n. , Sicilipes troxi sp. n. , Brennandania jacoti sp.n., Pygmodispus (P. ) abestus sp.n., Scutacarus ameropannonicus sp. n. and S. subsphaeroideus sp. n. New combination is: Sicilipes problematicus comb.n. for Bakerdania problematica Mahunka, 1975. While examining eagle and owl nests and pellets Mr. J.R.PHILIPS collected several species of Tarsonemid mites. A further species was discovered under the elytron of a beetle (Trox variolatus Mels.) inhabiting an owl nest. In identifying the material eight species were ascertained of which six proved to be new for science, whose descriptions foHow hereunder. PYGME PHORIE" AE Pygmephorellus pinguisetus sp.n. Measurements. Length: 188-216^, breadth: 96-120/1. Habitus. In general outRne much resembUng typical form of the genus, propodosoma broad, at its base only scarcely narrower than hysterosoma, latter oval in outRne. Body heavily chitinized. Dorsal side (Fig. 1). Rostrum broadly rounded. Peritremes small, situated laterally. Club of sensillus asymmetrical. Peritreme and bothridium enclosing a more or less triangular field with transversal sculpture. Hairs various in length; rostral hair emitted in basal half of prodorsum in level with bothridial hairs. Hairs of hysterosoma again greatly varying in length, c^ only haR as long as Cg, hairs &2 anc * *2 on ^ y about a third or quarter as long as their corresponding inner mates (e^ and f^). Segment H with three pairs of hairs, h^ and h 2 thinner than rigid hg. Ventral side (Fig. 2). First sternal plate heavily chitinized, apodemes very thick, besides several heavily thickened parts perceptible suitable for muscle attachment. Posterior sternal plate weakly chitinized, apodemes thin. ap. 4 and ap. 5 short, while ap. 3 divided. AH hairs emitted on ventral plates somewhat thickened at base. First sternal plate emitting five (3 +2) pair of hairs.
