SZÍTÓ, A.: On the overwintering niches of rice-fly (Hydrellia griseola Fall.) In the introduction the author discusses the extent of damage caused and those contradictory data which refer to rice-fly apparently living as a pest in winter wheat. Subsequently, he gives detailed account of his findings obtained by his isolator method , In analysing his data he concludes that the rice-fly in Hungary does not cause damage in our winter wheat, since it does not overwinter there. The individual number of overwintering imagines in uncultivated lands and rice stubble fields is higher than at rice dams and at the dams of the canals. It is the female that overwinters. Author clearly shows the exact overwintering sites and as a final conclusion he establishes that owing to the damage caused by the fly, originally developing in the leaves of aquatic plants, in Hungary rice production may be concieved only through preventive chemical protection, accordingly, further investigations are needed.
