STEINMANN (Received: January 2, 1973) Abstract. - A subf amiliar and generic classifiaction of the family Pygidicranidae VERHOEPP, 1902, (Dermaptera) is given, with a consistent grouping of external morphological characteristics and the features of the genital apparatus, in order to establish an identification key for the elaboration of world-wide material. The family Pygidicranidae was established by VERHOEPP, 1902, for the most primitive Dermaptera, named later Protodermaptera by ZACHER (1911). BURR (1915) justified the relationship of these taxa - assigned lately to the most well-defined group of Dermaptera - on the basis of comparative examinations of anatomical characteristics of the genital apparatus. The evolutional succession of lower systematic units of the family is not yet cleared, beoause the succession of the identifying characteristics of diverse kind and rank, of their taxonomic and classif icatory values remains to be defined. Dur ing to the different valuations of these characteristics, they were used as representing variously interpreted rank in the classification. Por my part,I attempted to revise the group and its characteristics and succeeded in great lines to apply them on identical levels, that is, to retain the higher taxonomical units on their higher
