The impairment of human anatomical preparations by the skin-moth (Tinea pellionella L.

) * In the inadequatly protected collection of the petrous bone the authors observed damage caused by a Tinea pellionella L. larva. In the embryonic petrous bone preserved in 10 % formalin solution the caterpillar consumes the mucous membrane lamellae In a set sequence. The caterpillar of Tinea pellionella L. on entering the tympanic cavity explores the chamber, then proceeds to feed on the vessel—free mucous membrane in a semicircular fashion. In the beginning the trunks and the mucous membrane covering the surface of the cover bone are avoided but when the supply of the mucous membrane lamellae runs short, the vessels, the mucous membrane adhering to the wall of the cavity and the remaining soft parts are also devoured. The larva leaves the tendon of stapedius and tendon of tensor tympani intact. Invariably it takes a rest on the bony labyrinth of poor texture. Thus it may be concluded that the caterpillar lives according to a preset programme in the cavity of the middle ear.
