the vegetation is more shrubby, in some places almost without undergrowth between the dense shrubs (Cape Coast - Winneba section), whereas the eastern part of the zone is a more or less open grassland. There has recently been an increase in agricultural land use of the zone, partly due to improvements in farming methods. 4) Strand and mangrove zone The narrow sandy strand belt follows almost the whole length of the coast, marked by the abundance of coconut palms. The line is interrupted only in places where s.teep rocks emerge high above the sea. The eastern and western thirds of the coast line are particularily rich in lagoons. The lagoons, together with the river inundations, form the area of mangrove vegetation. The climate of the strand and mangrove zone is similar to its hinterland, modified by the humid sea breeze and spray. The vegetation on the strand consists mainly of erect or creeping succulents and grasses, which usually do not form a continuous carpet on the sand. The lagoon shores, marshy lagoon beds and the. inundation areas of some rivers are covered by mangrove. The mangrove type of the country is usually of shrub level and always lacks tall mangrove trees. The strand zone is favourable for extended coconut plantations. Which is the best season for collecting? As a rule, there is no season in the tropics without good opportunities for insect collecting, though the richest material can be gathered in the shortest time during the advancing rainy season, after the long dry period. This is from early May to mid July in the south, and up to six weeks later in the north. With the regular heavy rains the richness of the fauna diminishes and remains at a medium level till the first month of the dry season.
