The vegetation type is the multilayered high forest but, in contrast to the rainforest type, the majority of trees in the uppermost levels are deciduous. These trees lose their foliage more or less simultaneously during the long dry season (November-February). The area of original vegetation is much reduced by farming and timber export and is only preserved in forest reserves. The area under forest reserves is 5,804 square miles (16,600 km 2 ). An artificial forest type, the cocoa forest, should be mentioned, as it is the most common forest type in the area. For cocoa farming, only the undergrowth and the lowest tree levels of the forest are cleared and replaced by cocoa shrubs. This ecosystem under the canopy of tall trees is comparatively poor in species. Another typical artificial biotope is the secondary bush, which originates mainly from shifting farming. The vegetational aspect of the secondary bush as well as that of the cocoa forest vary profoundly according to the different ecological conditions. The transitional belt around the forest zone, with its mosaic vegetation, cannot be described as an independent zone, for all its characteristics are intermediates of the bordering zones. Still the landscape is distinctive ,often marked by an abundance of Borasus palms. As the climate and vegetation is a continuous succession between forest and savanna, the fauna naturally follows the same pattern, forming a colourful and typical aspect . 2) The northern savanna zone The zone is covering some 65,000 square miles (168,000 km ), north of the forest belt. This large zone is characterized by the severity of the dry season and the strong influence of the harmattan. In the northern part of the zone there is only one rainy season, but south of Bui a second rainy season occurs fairly frequently. Correspondingly, there are two floristically distinguishable types of guinea savanna. The precipitation is not much lower than in the forest zone,
