Lefinie Reservation (5 Jan. 1964 - 14 Jan. 1964; m a. s.l.). The extensive big game reservation lies on the Batelce plateau, in the river-systeni of the Lefinie river. The greater part of its visited northern portion is covered by primordial and only partly secondary savannas near the villages Ego and Mpo. The subsistence of the primary savanna with low plants on this latitude is made possible by the relative altitude (4-600 m a.s.l.) and sandy soil of the plateau. Our quarters was on the top of a high hill (S 2°30' E 15 0 29'),with the fine galery forests of the Nambouli river and the 2 km wide zone of the' surrounded primary savanna below it. In the immediate vicinity of the camp, there was a young secondary forest, and, 20 km to the NE, the multilayer Mbeokala forest. 6. Brazzaville. The plant of our host Institute lies on the northern margin of the city (S 4°10'38" - E 15°10 , 28 , » ; 360 m a.s.l.). The expedition had its headquerters on this settlement between the linger trips, as well as during the first and last days of its sojourn in the Congo (16 Oct. 28-Oct. 1963; 15 Nov. - 22 Nov.lÇ63; 15 Dec. 1963 - 4 Jan. 1964; 15 Jan. - 21 Jan. 1964). The park of the Institution is surrounded by stunted and degraded woods, sparsely cultivated agricultural areas and strongly degraded secondary savannas. In between the pauses of packing, the conservation of the collected materials, and the preparations for the future trips, these areas afforded preliminary and then supplementary collecting possibilities. Oneday trips were made to the following sites: the river Djoue about 15 km above its mouth into the Congo (S 4°10'40" - E 15°10 , 20'*); the shores were covered with high coastal plants, strongly disturbed shrubberies, and palm groves with dense underbrush. - Three separate trips to the shores of the Congo below the city, at
