Judit Lebegyev: A Stag from Mycenae and the Greek prehistoric Sherd collection of the Hungarian National Museum

90 JUDIT LEBEGYEV LH IIA. Cf. similar papyri on palace style amphorae: Mycenae, Wace 1921-1923, PI. LI.; Berbati, KALOGEROPOULOS 1998, PI. 37 a-b. Kakovatos, KALOGEROPOULOS ibid. PI. 37b-d. On a FS 103 beak-spouted jug from Aegina, HILI.ER 1975, PI. 13, 158. Comment: On the back of the sherd the name, R. W. Hutchinson was written. Richard Wyatt Hutchinson (1894-1970) was educated in St. John's College, Cambridge. 4' 1 Alongside with Winifred Lamb, his contemporary at Cambridge, he joined the British School of Athens's excavation at Mycenae under the directorship of A. J . B. Wace in 1921. He was member of the team between 1921 and 1928, and keeper of the Museum at the site during the excavations of 1922. 5 0 Most probably he picked up this sherd at that time, during the cleaning of the walls from the dump of Schliemann's excavations. 29. (Fig. 10a) Unpainted rim fragment from open shape, most probably FS 263 two-handled goblet. From Mycenae. D. rim: H. 5.8; W. 5.7 cm. Fine fabric with very rare inclusions of small white grits. Fracture 10YR 7/2 light grey; slipped and burnished on exterior and interior, exterior 10YR 7/4 very pale brown. LH IIA - IIB. 30. (Fig. 10, upper left; Fig. 10b) Rim fragment from a FS 254 "Fphyraean" goblet. Mycenae. [AMW]. D. rim: 14 cm. FL 3.8; W. 3.7 cm. Fine fabric with very rare small white grits. Fracture: core 10YR 7/4 very pale brown; near surfaces 10YR 6/6 reddish brown; slipped on exterior and interior, exterior 7.5YR 7/4 pink, interior 5YR 6/6 - 7.5YR 6/6 reddish yellow, burnished to medium high lustre; matt 2.5YR 5/6 red paint. Decoration: FM 58.3 free-standing chevron consisting of three converging concentric curving hoops, on the top ovoid splash. LH IIB. The free-standing multiple chevron motif generally appears below the handle zone and only rarely found as a principal motif. Cf. Midea, DEMAKOPOULOU ET AI .. 20002001, 48—49, Fig. 51 (eight banded chevrons); Korakou, DICKINSON 1972, Pl. 34e, top row, right (fragment of an at least six banded chevron). Comment: Given the small size of the painted motif relative to the available space, it may formed part either a row of similar motives, as on the Midea example, or it may have been applied as a filling ornament on the sides of the main decoration, as on a goblet from Korakou, В LEGEN 192 i, 55, flg. 75,3. 31. (Fig. 10, upper middle; Fig. 10c) Body fragment from a closed shape. Mycenae. H. 4.7; W. 4.3 cm. Fine fabric with no inclusions. Fracture: core 5YR 6/6 reddish yellow, near outer surface 10YR 7/4 very pale brown. Interior surface 10YR 7/4 very pale brown; exterior slipped and burnished 10YR 7/3 very pale brown; lustrous 7.5YR 2.5/2 very dark brown paint. Decoration: two parallel wavy lines, with an elongated, rounded solidly painted motif (part of a lily?) placed in the curve of the two lines. LH IIB - IIIA1. 32. (Fig. 10. upper right; Fig. lOd) Body fragment from a closed shape, most probably piriform jar (FS 28, 30, 31 or 44). Tiryns. H. 4; W. 3.8 cm. Fine fabric with no inclusions. Fracture 10YR 7/3 very pale brown; interior surface 10YR 7/3 very pale brown; exterior slipped 10YR 8/3 very pale brown, burnished; lustrous 7.5YR 3/1 - 4/2 very dark grey to brown paint. Decoration: FM 70 scale pattern. 4 9 For a biographv see, D. W. ). Gill. Hutchinson, Richard Wyatt (1894-1970) The Dictionary of British Classicists.
