András Markó: The Upper Palaeolithic Site at Szob

10 MARKÓ ANDRÁS Fig. 2. The excavation plan bv M. Gábori (Archives of the Archaeological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, inv. number: 17/1966.) The majority of the artefacts from the 'lower layer' were made of pebble raw material. The pieces of hydrothermal origin and radiolarite types of various colours could be collected from the alluvia of the Vah and the Danube 1 7 or from older pebble deposits as well; the quartzite and nummulitic chert pebbles 1 8 may probably originate from the same formations. Cortical andesite pieces were used for ground stone industry and producing rough ilakes in great quantity; the slabs and pebbles can de found today in the bed sediments of the nearby streamlets.
