The upper register, flanked by four roundels referring again to victories over dark powers, begins with Apollo, identical with Baldr (in later sources) according to the interpretatio germanica, who rules over the new world. In the later versions of the myth, the gods play with golden gaming boards; 65 on the Lovas casket, possibly due to classical inspirations, only the most important god appears together with her muses, who, according to classical tradition had sung their first song in honour of the gods, after they had defeated the giants.
