AEGEAN AMPHORAE IN PANNÓNIA 121 So far the works on commercial links of Pannónia have mainly discussed the foodstuffs coming from Italy. Because there was no precise information, it was supposed that the bulk of the Pannonian import had come from there. We are now beginning to have more detailed information on the various workshops and the production of the different regions. 2 4 On the basis of the morphological, petrological and epigraphic research, the dating and identification of the amphorae which has become more reliable. Beside the amphorae, a significant amount of wine had been imported to Pannónia in wooden barrels. Strabo referred to this and there is archaeological evidence 31 to support his claim. Wooden containers have been found in a number of settlements, but they still need further analysis. 3 2 The Greek amphorae have no stamps referring to the workshops and there are only a few painted inscriptions. The dating of these amphorae is onlypossible on the basis of archaeological evidence. Some further evidence is provided by the Greek amphorae found outside Pannónia. The Rhodian type, however, which was produced over a considerable span of time, not even these analogies can offer substancional help. The amphorae characteristic of early the Empire have been found only in the settlements of the Amber Route and in Sirmium. The Rhodian type seems to be an exception since specimens are found in the settlements of the limes and in Gorsium. The Kapitän II amphora is characteristic of the third and fourth centures. This type has been unearthedonly in the settlements of the limes. (With one possible exception from Scarbantia.) DISTRIBUTION IN PANNÓNIA Rhodian type Emona- Bezeczky 1987, 69. No. 229, 70.
