Vörös István: Campona – Nagytétény római tábor állatcsontmaradványai

CAMPONA ÁLLATCSONTLELETEI 95 the goats belong to two types (species). Horn cores of sheep are represented by the short "goat-like" palustris type , by a cork-screw type and by the long thick spiral one with triangular cross-section which belongs to the Copper sheep type (Fig. 2. 2.) are present. Among goat horn-cores also the „scimitar-shaped" aegagrus type (Fig. 2. 3 — 5) and the inwards turning prisca type remains occur. The origin of the sheep with a V-shape, inwards turning cork-screw form horn core (Fig. 2. 1. a —b) which during Roman times was an imported type is still unknown at present. We have to look for its origin most probably in the Near East and/or in Northern Africa. The form and turn of "cork-screw" horn cores published earlier 1 7 are considerably differ from those of the true (real) cork-screw forms. The quantity of pig remains is very small. The 11 horse individuals belong to a low and a high stature type. During the studies made on the animal bone materials of recent excavations the quantity of the remains of Roman Age domestic donkeys had considerably increased. Apart from Campona the following Roman sites in Pannnonia yielded ass finds: Tác—Gorsium 1 9, Ságvár, Alsóhetény, Szakály — Réti földek 2 0, Kővágószőlős, 2 1 Sopianae —Pécs, Nagyharsány; from the Barbaricum: Artánd, 2 2 Derecske, Tiszaföldvár, Tázlár. At the native Celtic sites of Pannónia (Szakály — Rétiföldek, Pilismarót) asses of bigger stature 23 were found than at the Late Roman Empire Period sites. 2 4 The dog finds which came to light from the vallum of the castellum belong to the same type which reminds more of the foxhound (Fig. 5. 1 — 2). Antler remains had accumulated at two places in the excavated part of the camp; in the building in front of the principia and in the debris over the road beside the NE camp wall. The distribution of the red deer antler remains is the following: crown tine crown base tine royal or trez tine bez tine beam beam base cast beam beam cortex thin split pieces 20 6 26 23 2 26 1 3 4 10 6 65 К) 13 Without exception those antler remains are halfproducts or waste from the antlerworker's workshop. During their processing the antlers were cut into pieces according to the future function of their parts intented for use. At first the tines fthe brow, the bez and the royal of the antlers) and the crown were removed
