Gáspár Dorottya: Lituus vagy baculus vagy...?
LITUUR OR BACULUS OR. . .? A smal group of graves came to light between the fortress and the settlement at Brigetio. 1 Here, in grave l'a very interesting object was found. It is a silver stick with gold inlay and niello (fig. 1 a —b). L. Barkóczi, who led the excavations dated the cemetery and the stick as well to the turnd ol third and fourth centuries. 7 And he considered this objectalituus. Later, however, E.B. — Thomas told this stick to be a bacillus, 9 This contribution examines which definition is right. That is why it enumerates the formal and choronoloaical requirements of the augur's staff The conclusion is that thist objest does not suit either to a lituus or to a bacillus. The first baculi were sceptre-shaped and appeared later than our silver stick. 17-2 9 But lituus, however, is generally without a nodus as the representations and Roman authors improv. 4 9 Bnt this stick has a nodum. On the other hand K. Latte mentions a virga rituális (pries's staff), which was used at offerings.' 1 8 The contribution — based on Latte s opinion — rises a hypothesisl namely, that the stick is question is a virga ritualist which was used by immigrants, very likely Syriens, at thier offerings. 5 2' 5: l' 55-5 7
