FOLIA ARCHAEOLOGICA XXXIX. 1988. BUDAPEST PALAEOLITHIC SETTLEMENT IN NADAP Viola T. DOBOSI- Béla JUNGBERTÁrpád RINGER - István VÖRÖS HISTORY OF RESEARCH (Viola T. DOBOSIBéla JUNGBERT) 1982. András Dér, citizen of Budapest reported that sand pits had been opened on the edge of the old stone quarry in Nadap. The earth taken out was carried to road side fillings and the reconstruction of the shore line of Lake Velencei. During András Dér's excursions, he collected animal bones from the disturbed surface. The finds were to the Museum of Natural History, to Dénes Jánossy, who handed over the fossil bones and the chipped stone tools found together with them to the curator of the Prehistoric collection of the Hungarian National Museum. On field survey we found seemingly undisturbed surfaces on both sides of the road leding to the quarry, and decided to deepen the trial trenches on this spot. 1983. We visited the site several times. It was A. Ringer who first made a conspicious examination of the stratigraphy of the several metres thick loose deposit lying on the granite, and who tried to identify the original level of the finds. In the meantime, the rest of the material collected by A. Dér went first to the István Király Museum and then to the Hungarian National Museum. 1985. The Hungarian National Museum and the István Király Museum organized a joint excavationt at the Nadap site between the 27th of May and the 6th of June. 1 The trial trenches were not started on the previously indicated spots, on the two sides of the road, because in the meantime A. Ringer had identified the exact site: he had found a fossil bone in original position in the side of the sand pit. Thus, with the localization of the settlement the trenches were placed right on this spot (Fig.l). We started with the cleaning of the section/profile A. The eight meter wide wall was divided into three step-like parts. In the section it was possible to reconstruct the process of the filling of the small dry valley. The palaeolithic settlement must have been at the end of the valley widening towards 1 Jmgbert, B. 1985 T. Dobosi, У.J Wigbert В ,-Kinger, Á. 1986. 20.
