A MESOLITIIIC AUROCHS SKELETON 81 large bones of the Szabadszállás aurochs population need a careful study because the Pleistocene age of the remains is possible. II. Table 8 the dimensions of long bones and the withers height values of European Mesolithic aurochs skeletons. The dimensions of aurochs bones from the Preboreal-Boreal Period, clearly demonstrate the difference between the two sexes as well as a trend of changes in the somatic (body) dimensions, that on the other hand is determined biogeographically. The withers height of aurochs bulls (in mms): the skeleton from Gibijo 2 6 (Iberian Peninsula) 1505; Kecel-Rózsaberek (Carpathian Basin) 1577 (calculated from only the dimensions os 6 bones); the Soro 2 7 skeleton (Denmark) 1630, 1 and the one from St. Damme 2 8 1 640. The withers height of aurochs decreases from the N to S. The radius-tibia of the Gibijo skeleton is realatively long and its humerus-femur is short. In Denmark the femur-tibiais longer. The bones of the hind quarters of the Kecel-Rózsaberek skeleton are shorter and thinner than those of the aurochs from Denmark. The withers height of the aurochs cows is considerably lower than that of the 2 5 Degerbol 1970, Table 11., 12., 14., 15., 17. 2 6 Altuna 1974. 2 7 Degerbol 1970, Table 11., 12., 14., 15., 17. 2 8 Degerbol 1970, Table 11., 12., 14., 15., 17.
