THE PILISSZÁNTÓ - ROCK-SHELTER II. 43 implement belonging to the |ankovichian — regardless of its uncertain age and puts it into the period before the Würm I' 2 7. 6., On the basis of the revised animal remains separated by sediments (Table 1.) the age of the Pleistocene layers of the Pilisszántó — Rock-Shelter 11 are as follows: Upper level: 5 ja — 5 layers: End of Würm III, Late Pilisszántó Faunal Wave, circa 18 500 - 15 ООО ВС 2*. The Equus sp. II. from the Ságvár camp site also occurs among the species. Middle level: layer 7: An interstadial phase. Two interstadials could be counted, but the occurence of Coelodonta and Bos suggest the period of the Szeleta Faunal Wave (Würm I/II, Hengelo Interstadial). Lower level: layer 8 : The remains of a small wolf are not sufficient for dating. The terminus ante quem of the layer and of the Jankovichian type tool found in it is the Szeleta Faunal Wave (Würm I/II Interstadial). Layer 8 itself was certainly deposited during the preceding period traditionally called Würm I or PreWürm. This indirect faunal dating is easily reconsiled with the historical determination given by V. Gábori-Csánk 2 9. When this paper was prepared the sequence of layers was studied as well as the fauna from the Pilisszántó — Rock-Shelter I. After this stratigraphic-paleontological revision it seems that there is some confusion or rather stratigraphical uncertainities in the material from this rock-shelter. It also seems that the authors published certain species as belonging to the same layer, altouhg according what is presently known they mismatched. The corrected fauna from the lower groups of layers (D G_ 7) of the Pilisszántó Rock-Shelter I shows a great similarity if not identity with the fauna from the Middle level (L 7) of the Rock-shelter II (Table 1.). If we ignore the arctic tundra Alopex, subarctic Rangifer and taiga Gulo and Lepus timidus species and leave them out of the fauna from the lower group of layers of the Pilisszántó—RockShelter 1, the "remainding" fauna consist of temperate forest and steppe elemets — in accordance with the faunal assemblage from layer 7 of the Rock-Shelter II. The only older faunal element is the Megaloceros which could be from the lowermost, D T layer, as well. Furthermore a revision of Megaloceros bone remains has became necessary. The re-evalution of the stratigraphy and material from the Pilisszántó RockShelter II is part of a continuous study which aims to reconstruct an even more detailed history of the last glaciation by using results from recent research. 2 7 Gábori-Csánk, V., op. cit.
