32 VIOLA T. DOBOSI - ISTVÁN VÖRÖS Both are from bones of a large mammals. "small bone point" (Pb 51/114) M: 21x6 mm. The bone arrowhead and the three bone fragments originatide in the tan loess with yellow grains (1 7). ANIMAL REMAINS OF THE PILISSZÁNTÓ ROCK-SHELTER II The animal bone finds from the 1946 trial excavation were first studied and published by L. Vértes 1 9. The remains are in the Palaeontological Department of the Museum of Natural History. They are registered as originating from the "lower layer" (= lower group of layers: 8—9— 10 layers) and from the "upper layer (= upper group of layers: 5—6—7 layers). Inv. No.: V. 60. 1399—1426. By studying the list of registered bone finds from the layer, the identification of bones in the Paleontological Department and, the results of the investigations made on the original sediments still found on the surface of the bones the separation of bones and consequently of species per layers became possible. During the 1946 trial excavations and the 1952 rescue excavations — the latter were made by D. Jánossy — the Holocene layers (L 2 — 3 — 4) of the Pilisszántó Rock-Shelter II yielded bones from the following species: Domestic animals: Equus caballus (os phalangis I. dext. post.; from a small horse in L 3; Fig. 5.4.); Sus scrofa dom,; Canis familiaris. Wild animals: Lepus europaeus (brown hare), Canis lupus (wolf) Vulpes vulpes (red fox), Felis silvestris (wild cat) Meies meles (badger), Capreolus capreolus (roe deer). Upper Pleistocene sediments (number of bones/individuals) Upper level: 5/a— 5 layers, yellow loess Vulpes vulpes 6/3 Alopex lagopus 1/1 Equus sp. I. 9/6 Equus sp. II. 1/1 Rangifer tarandus 16/4 Lepus timidus 1/1 34/16 The species Felis silvestris, Cervus elaphus and Capreolus capreolus identified earlier must be excluded out from the fauna list of the upper level (Tabl. 1.). Vulpes vulpes — 6/3: С sup. dext.; corpus mandibulae fr. sin.; С inf. corona fr.; radius dext. prox. et d ist.; mp dist. fr. Alopex lagopus — 1/1: corpus manibulae dext. fr. Measurements of mandibulae and lower teeth row (in mm): 1 9 Vértes, L., 1951.
