JEWELRY, MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 27 SZOB This site has a special character. The poor, scattered occupation layer lay at a depth of 3,5 ms' in the profile of a high loess wall over the inundation area of the river Ipoly. During the excavations a campsite of an Upper Paleolithic group — collectors of snails used jewelry making came to light. Here M. Gábori found small piles of molluscs at 2—4 ms' distance from each other. The diameter of these piles were 20—25 cms, while their height was 15 cms. The molluscs had been left at the site for future transport. :i e There is a paleontological site already known since 1848, in the vicinity of the archeological site, where these molluscs may be collected from Miocene marine sediments. The specimens most suitable for further manufacturing were then selected. On the basis of the scattered occurrence of artifacts and because of the lack of game animal remains we may conclude that the site was used only to fulfil this purpose i. e. collecting molluscs. 3 7 ARKA-HERZSARÉT Amulet (Fig. 3, 2.) Inv. № Pb 60/66. Dimensions: 27,5—25,5 mms. During his excavations in July, 1960, Vértes found a flat, perforated serpentine pebble in section I, —125 cms. 3 8 The site was inhabited by Gravettian people. Its lower culture layer belongs to the Ságvár—Lascaux interstadial. The upper culture layer dates to the very end of the Ice Age. TARCAL-CITROMBÁNYA (Citrom-quarry) Snails used as ornaments , Dentalium, Vermetus (Fig. 4, 7 — 8.) Inv. № Pb 71/ /113—114. A great part of this Upper Paleolithic site was destroyed by quarrying. Our small-scale excavation was sufficientonly to verify that this site is situated in the centre of the "obsidian region". The culture layer was situated in loess over andesite. The two snail shells used as ornaments were found in section « B» 39 PILIS MARÓT -PÁLRÉT A spots marking a habitation site belonging to the Ságvár-Lascaux interstadial were excavated here during a campaign of two years. The results of the 1982 excavations will be published in the 1983 volume of Acta Arch.Hung. Here we mention only some scattered finds from the occupation level. 3 6 Gábori, M., Acta Arch.
