AUROCHS REMAINS FROM SITES OF 9 —10TH CENTURY Z A L A V A R —M О S А В U R G During the excavations made in the settlement area of Zalavár— Mosaburg archaeological finds and animal bone remains of different periods came to light. In 1951, B. Bálint excavated some Neolithic pits. He found 55 pieces of bones which 18 specimens belonged to 2 Aurochs individuals. 5 In 1951—53, G. Fehér unearthed Early Medieval remains which according to S. Bökönyi contained the following aurochs remains 0. 2 horn-cores, 6 extremity fragments (2 humerus dist, femur dist, 3 ph. I.) and several rib fragments. The specific distribution of animal bone remains collected from the 9—10th century periods of Zalavár— Mosaburg (including older and more recent investiga­tions) can be seen on Table I.' The identification of bull or cow for each bone was based on measurements taken during analysis. Aurochs bone remains: 1. horn-core dext. bull (Fig. 1,1) The base of the horn-core is incomplete and damaged with traces of cuttings­carvings over its surface. Long, open horn-core. Loc.: Vár (Castle) — V s 83. F/80.: 9—10th century. 2. horn-core dext. with the collum cornua, bull (Fig. 1, 2) The horn-core is long, curved, closed; the base of horn-core is wide, flat. There are traces of cutting on its surface. It is broken into two pieces and has been glued. s Loc.: Vár — 22. Block, —84 cm; Inv. № 1287. 9th century. 3. horn-core dext. bull (Fig. 1, 3) The horn-core is short, curved and closed. Its upper third is cut off. The surface of the cut is smooth. The base of horn-core has a triangular section; its frontal surface is wide and flat. The upper part comes to a point. There is strong beading around the base. On the surface of its base, especially on its frontal side there are traces of cuttingspiltting. Loc.: Vár — V s 2.
