AN CAVE BEAR HUNTERS' SITE IN THE ISTÁLLÓSKŐ CAVE István VÖRÖS The Istállóskő Cave is situated in the Bükk Mountains (N-Hungary) near the village Szilvásvárad in the upper part of the Szalajka valley. This valley runs in NW-SE direction at the SW side of the Istállóskő ("Stable Rock") Hill built up by Triassic limestone. The height of the cave is 535 ms above the sea-level, its length is 45 m, its width is 8—9 m, and its maximum height is c. 10 m. Between 1912 and 1951 J. Hillebrand, A. Saád, О. Kadic, M. Mottl and L. Vertes made excavations in the cave on 13 occassions.

1 THE SEDIMENTARY INFILLING AND I.AYERS OF THE ISTÁLLÓSKŐ CAVE The whole sedimentary infilling of the Istállóskő Cave was c. 3,5—4 m thick, containing c. 1—1,5 m thick Holocene and 2,5—3 m thick Pleistocene sedimentary sequences. The uppermost part of the Pleistocene sequence has been rather disturbed, especially in the middle part of the cave, because of the Neolithic-Copper Age and recent pits and hearths dug into it. The Pleistocene sedimentary sequence of the Istállóskő Cave is the following (from above): Layer VI -— light yellow clay, with the so-called "upper microfauna startum."
