~10 ISTVÁN VÖRÖS THE ANIMAL BONE REMAINS OF THE ISTÁLLÓSKŐ CAVE During earlier excavations only a few animal bones were found in the cave. M. Mottl and L. Vértes however, collected in their 1938, 1948 and 1950—51 excavations a great quantity of them. 1 0 The zoological, faunal investigation of the mammal and bird remains of the cave and the evaluation from the viewpoints of environmental reconstruction were made by D. Jánossy. 1 1 ARCHAEO ZOO LOGICAL REKONST RUCTION This paper deals with the results of the investigations 1 made on the bone remains of the hunted mammals of the cave with the aid of archaeozoological reconstruction method. The application of this method, invented by M. Kretzoi for the evaluation of the bone remains of the Middle Palaeolithic open-air site Érd, 1 2 makes possible the palaeoeconomic and here especially the hunting economic investigations and an evaluation of the zoological material. It is only the bone remains found in the 1950—51 excavations of the Istállóskő Cave which can be investigated directly. This material is in the Palaeontological Department of the Museum of Natural History. 1 3 The material of earlier excavations can be evaluated only indirectly from the publications and rather unevenly because the different parts of this material were described with different accuracy. The total mammal fauna list of the Istállóskő Cave indicating the separation by layers 1 4 is demonstrated on Table 1. 1 0 Mottl, M., op. cit. (1944) 43--.; Vértes, L., op. cit.
