Viola T. Dobosi: Őskori telep Demjén-Hegyeskőbércen

DEMJÉN-HBGYF.SKŐBÉRC 39 Summary The find material collected and the known settlement object give the following evidence: Demjén-Hegyeskőbérc is a settlement of a population group, preserving Late Ice Age — and perhaps even earlier, East Gravettian Arka-type - traditions, living in the Neolithic Age. In the food-acquiring of its inhabitants hunting had already lost its specific and decisive importance, though food-producing did not become predominant as yet. They maintained intensive connections with other communities, which lead a real Neolithic way of life, whence they could obtain their polished stone implements and pottery. The settlement is connected to Palaeolithic by the followings: 1. Typologically: the bulk of chipped stone implements, primarily the burins; perhaps also the plan-parallel flint plates; 2. Situation of the settlement (hilltop surrounded by a brook), its character (square house ground with stone packing), the concentration of archaeological find material on smaller patches. The settlement is connected to Mesolithic - to the Eger culture - by the followings: 1. Types of rough implements, their ratio 2. It was excavated at the bottom of the humus, in a Holocene stratigraphical position. It is segregated, though, from the Mesolithic find assemblages of Eger type by the total lack of leaf points. The settlement is connected to Neolithic by the followings: 1. Pottery sherds, a polished stone chisel 2. Some chipped stone implements of Neolithic type. The settlement gets a quite peculiar appearance by the fact that, contrary to Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlements, no animal remains and not the smallest proof for the use of fire came to light. This phenomenon can be explained only by further excavations. Lacking these, there is no possibility, though, of a nearer chronological classification, we have to content ourselves with the statement that the settlement is contemporaneous with the Neolithic of northeastern Hungary.
