István Fodor: Az uráli és finnugor őshaza kérdése (Régészeti áttekintés)

Folia Archaeologica XXVII. 1976 Budapest THE PROBLEM OF THE URALIAN AND FINNO-UGRIAN ORIGINAL HOME (Archaeological survey) István FODOR According to an often-investigated and well-proved doctrine of linguistic history, distant ancestors of the peoples belonging to the Finno-Ugrian family of languages once spoke a more or less homogeneous language and lived on about the same territory. This area is usually called the original home of Finno-Ugrians. According to a general opinion the notion of an original home has to be delimited in time as well: it would mean the area where the ancestors of the Finno-Ugrians had lived in times immediately preceding their separation. This temporal restriction was made necessary by practical causes. Data referring to previous times are namely for the time being not sufficient for drawing conclusions regarding ethnohistorical processes. The question of a geographic localization of the original home is a cardinal point of the prehistory of all Finno-Ugrian peoples. There is, therefore, no prehistorical synthesis in special literature whose author would not bestow a special attention to this much discussed problem. Being not in the position of dwelling on every opinion, in the followings we try to give merely a short survey on some, primarly recent, results of one discipline, namely of archaeology. By way of introduction we should like to bestow, though, some thoughts upon the steep ascent, covered by archaeology till our days. In the field of linguistics, were summarized recently by |. Gulya; 1 J. Kodolányi jr., on his part, collected the most important works of earlier generations of Hungarian scholars. 2 In the work of Gy. László we find a historical survey over the archaeological research of the original homef while the study of P. Hajdú summarizes the most recent results of all disciplines concerned. 4 1 Gulya, J., Prarodina finno-ugrov i razdelenie finno-ugorskoj etniceskoj obscosti. In: Osnovy finno-ugorskogo jazykoznanija.
