Tibor Kovács: Askoi, Bird-Shaped Vessels, Bird-Shaped Rattles in Bronze Age Hungary

ASKOI, BIRD-SIIAPED VESSELS 27 APPENDIX Bronze Age Bird-shaped Vessel form Törtei In 1968, József Andó, while ploughing his field lying on the main road to Nagykőrös, in the Törtei border, disturbed some urn graves. He maintained, that in one of them, in a lidded urn, he found a bird-shaped vessel (Fig. 4). The dish imitating the body of a stylized bird, is elongated and empty inside. From its opening, two small handles emerge. The lid, serving to cover the dish, had disappeared after it was found. The head of the bird is solid, its maker shaped it with a style, reminding of wood-carving, placing surfaces, joining break-lines. On the two sides of the head, protrusions signify the eyes. On the top of the head, there are two holes, 5-6 mm deep. The three sides of the neck are ornamented by horizontal lines of dots, and the mouth-opening with perpendicular ones. Originnally it was filled with encrustment, as the five triangular patterns on the side of the dish, are encrusted with horizontal lines. The colour of the vessel is grey, its bottom part —probably still before burning —is deformed, to make it in a standing position, pull to the left. Its length is 12.5 cm. its height, 10 cm.
