Szakács Margit: Irinyi János élete és munkássága

THE LIFE AND WORK OF J. IRINYI 213 Irinyi attended the University of Berlin in 1838 and in 1839 returned to Hungary and founded a match factory in the Nyár Street of Terézváros in Pest. He was not too successful mainly because his neighbours caused trouble for him. In 1841 he moved to the Tajnay House in Ösz Street, then three months later to the Müller House at no. 9, Városház Square where the authorities were unwilling to allow the establishment of a factory. In 1842 he entered into patnerthig with H. Schönwald, a coffeesubstitute manufacturer who bought his whole share in 1844. In the Society of Natural Science he was active in the department of chemistry and natural science, holding lectures and writing papers. In the Craftsmen's Association he supported Kossuth and fought for the development of Hungarian industry. Between 1838 and 1846 he did research and wrote theoretical studies: in 1838, „Über die Theorie der Chemie..."; in 1839, „A vegytani rokonság" (Affinity); in 1840, „A vegyaránytan" (Chemistry) and „A konyári tó"; and in 1846, „A vegytan elemei "(Chemical Elements). In 11846 he made a study-tour in France and Germany. After returning home he farmed on his estate at Vértes. In 1848 he wrote the twelwe-point proclamation containing the national demands. In 1849 he became the director of the Nagyvárad ammunition factory and because of this he was imprisoned for two months after the War of Independence. When he was released he returned to his estate. Later he held various positions. He spent his last years on his estate until his death on 17th December 1895.
