Fejős Imre: Kossuth fényképei
P hotographs of Louis Kossuth 203 photoprint is the only daguerreotype of Kossuth known in this country since the others have been preserved only in the form of engravings for book-printing purposes. When in London, A. F. J. Claudet, a member of the Royal Society, took daguerreotypes of Kossuth and his family in the autumn of 1851. Claudet was, most likely, responsible for a profile likeness, too, though this portrait was not signed by him. The other pictures taken of Kossuth have only been preserved in wood engravings done for single sheets, or for The London Illustrated News that published Kossuth's likeness in two of its issues dated 15th and 22nd November, 1851. The best likeness among the single sheets was done as a steel engraving by Th. Phillibrown , and this is the portrait which shows a close resemblance to the portrait on the Kossuth-dollar notes issued in the United States. It is not unreasonable to assume therefore that the likeness for the Kossuth-dollar notes was engraved also by Phillibrown for Danford, Bald and Co., New YorkPhiladelphia, the firm responsible for printing the Kossuth dollars. A number of daguerreotypes of Kossuth were taken during his tour in the United States in 1851—52. From among these we know his full-size standing portrait taken in Cincinnati by J. Kelly in February, 1852 ; two original daguerreotype plates by J. Halves , Boston, Massachussets, dated 17th and 18th April, 1852, and a photoprint from an original daguerreotype taken by Michael Kets Kemêty (i. e. Kecskeméthy), a Hungarian photographer in Washington. A stereo-series is known of Kossuth from his period on a lecture tour in England, and from the same period dates one of his most beautiful portraits by an unknown photographer that shows the exiled Regent of Hungary with his cloak thrown over his shoulder. His earliest Italian photographs dating from the time of the French-Italian Wars (1859), were taken by Boglioni and Le Lieure (Turin). Kossuth settled down for good in Turin in 1865. His photographer there was Ambrozetti whose best portrait represents Kossuth with his arms folded (1871). Kossuth at the age of 90 was photographed at Turin on 20th September, 1892, by Ede Ellinger , a photographer from Budapest on a visit to Italy.
