Banner János: Badeni leletek a szabolcsmegyei vissről

40 BANNER: FINDS OF THE BADEN CULTURE. FROM VISS (COUNTY SZABOLCS) 40 to be felt. Its execution is the same as that of specimens 3 and 4. Colour yellowish. The lower part is decorated with a network consisting of lines, of which the upper edge is in contact with deep dots of irregular shape. Above these dots is another dotted line. The rim is grooved. Height 8'8 cm, diameter at the mouth 17-5 cm and at the base 5 cm. The vessels nos. 3—9 came to light in one heap. 10. Bowl with inverted rim (Pl. I, fig. 10). Hemispherical form with well shaped bottom. After the widest part of the belly it abruptly turns in. Round the belly run two lines of irregular dots. These lines break up only where the characteristical and pierced lug is placed. Carefully executed and fired. Reddish brown in colour with brighter patches in places. Height 8 cm, diameter at the mouth 14-5 cm, at the belly 16-5 cm and at the base 6-2x6-5 cm. 11. Fragment of the cutting-edge of a shaft-holed stone axe. 12. Urn, fragmentary beyond restoration (Pl. I, figs. 14a —b) with human bones, among which there are also some fragments of the skull. Judging by their thinness it must be assumed to have been a child's grave. The urn — as far as can be concluded from the fragments — is reminiscent of those urns of the Bronze Age, with warts on their rim and with straight sides, which usually occur with cremated interments. The characteristical lug 4 which remained among its fragments assigns it to the Stone Age. The whole form cannot be reconstructed. Among the bones there was no trace of metal not even in the form of copper rust# which also proves its derivation from the Stone Age. The urn could not be measured. 13. Jug (Pl. II, figs. 2a—b) with globular lower part, cylindrical upper part and slightly everted rim. The base is flattened, thus the lower part kept better than the others its globular shape. The lower part is also decorated with flutings, broken up five times by protuberant warts on which run concentric circles. The warts fall on the lower part decorated with flutings in such a way that the flutings below and above them remain. At the junction of the upper part three flutings run round horizontally, above which are triangles consisting of lines. The grooved handle starts from the horizontal flutings and in a careful curve rises above the rim. The handle breaks up into three parts. The execution of the jug is extremely careful, the firing is excellent. Dark brown in colour with yellowish patches. Height 16-5 cm, diameter at the mouth 8-2 cm, at the belly 12 cm, the bottom could not be measured. 14. Polishing stone. Both of its ends are very worn. 15. Bowl (Pl. I, fig. 8). Reconstructed from the fragments of the mouth found in a heap and from the bottom which was found on the same spot. Its shape is reminiscent of the small bowl, which came to light from a grave at the Pap-farm on the Bodzáspart at Hódmezővásárhely (Fol. Arch. 1939, Pl. I, fig. 13) together with the earliest types of vessels. The lower part is a truncated cone, on the belly are warts spaced in threes. The rim is slightly everted. According to the fragments it must have been a carefully executed 4 Similar lug is published by Mr. Bayer from Ossarn. Eiszeit, 1928, V, Pl. XXII, fig. 11. specimen of dark grey colour. Height 15 cm, diameter at the mouth 33-4 cm, at the belly 31 cm and at the base 10 cm. 16. One-handled pot of medium size (Pl. II, fig. 4). Its shape is resembling the large vessel no. 1, but its measurements differ. As this pot came to light intact, from its form can be concluded the reconstruction of the aforementioned vessel. Thus the former could also have had an everted rim. The texture is as coarse as that of the other. It is also akin to the urn no. 12. Also red in colour with here and there yellowish patches. Height 19-5 cm, diameter at the mouth 17-2 cm, at the belly 19-5 cm, at the base 8 cm. 17. Deep bowl (Pl. I, fig. 9) with slightly inverted mouth. The bottom is shaped. Immediately near the 'bottom it is a truncated cone and higher up hemispherical. Texture coarse and gritty, poorly fired. The execution and the colour are identical with those of specimens nos. 1 and 16, as well as of the urn from the cremated interment. Height 14 cm, diameter at the mouth 21-5 cm and at the base 7-5 cm. 18. Handled pot (Pl. II, figs. 7a—b) with the lower part in the form of a truncated cone, but the upper with the sides curving to form a strongly pouched belly; the neck is cylindrical with slightly everted rim. The handle starts from the bottom of the neck and rises above the rim, where it breaks up into three parts. The sides of the handle, reconstructed from the fragments, here also rise upwards in a curve. Red in colour, quite well executed and fired. Height 25 cm, diameter at the mouth 22 cm, at the belly 25-2 cm and at the base 11-5 cm. Together with this pot the fragment of a five divisioned handle came to light. 19. Large vessel with handle (Pl. I, fig. 13) reminiscent of those early small forms which consist of a cylindrical upper part and globular lower part. The lower part is strikingly pouched. The bottom is shaped. The upper part is cylindrical. The wide handle, breaking into five parts, starts from the bottom of the cylindrical part and rises above the rim. Quite well executed. Grey in colour. Height 33-5 cm, diameter at the mouth 18 cm. at the belly 29 cm and at the base 11-5 cm. This is the largest among all the vessels^ that have come to light. 20. Small bowl (Pl. I, fig. 4) with inverted mouth. It is reconstructed from a -few fragments. Just under the rim run round two dotted lines, of which the upper continues also above the characteristical pierced lug. Under the dotted lines there is a network consisting of crossing lines. Brown in colour, carefully executed, well fired. Height 6-5 cm, diameter at the mouth 18 cm and at the reconstructed base 6 cm. 21. Bowl. (Pl. I, fig. 11). The bottom shaped, the lower part hemispherical, the mouth somewhat in the form of a funnel. The characteristical lug is placed at the junction of the two parts and falls on the pattern. Above the lug starts a line of dots and runs around the bowl. The second line of dots is just under the former. From this hang downwards the grooved triangles. The execution as well as the colour is the same as that of the former, with which it was also found. Height 8-5 cm, diameter at the mouth 18-5 cm and at the base 7 cm.
