FOGORVOSI SZEMLE «99. évf. 2. sz. 2006. 79 In the first epidemiological study after the examination of 9991 people we found 529 distal cantilever bridges, in the second study we examined 4606 people, and we found 487 distal cantilever bridges, 246 on the upper and 241 on the lower arches. Furthermore we examined the number of abutments and pontics, their proportion in different regions and the relation of the distal cantilever pontic to the distal area in dental arch. The data were coded on special sheets by computer on the spot. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS for Windows statistical software version 10.0. Results: In the second epidemiological study we found altogether 878 cantilever bridges, from which 406 replaced the tooth missing on the mesial end, 487 the tooth missing on the distal end and 15 bridges replaced both the mesially and distally missing teeth. From the cantilever bridges 241 (21.8%) have been placed on the lower arch, 381 (78.2%) on the upper. The men/women ratio was 106 (21.8%) to 381 (78.2%). Most of the distal cantilever bridges have been placed on the lower arch of women (193), the fewest on the mandibular arch of men (48). In the first epidemiological study great number of the bridges were constructed correctly: one pontic was supported by two abutments. In the remaining cases one pontic was supported by only one abutment, or two pontics were supported by two abutments. In the second epidemiological study most of the bridges were constructed correctly: two abutments supported one pontic (166, 341%). There were also a great number of bridges where one pontic was supported by one abutment (40, 8.21%), but we have not found any distal cantilever bridges where one abutment supported two pontics or two abutments supported two pontics. Distally from the cantilever pontic we most frequently found free end saddle (228), in 171 cases bounded saddle, in 85 cases patients own teeth and in 3 cases removable denture teeth. Discussion: The results of this study indicate, that the number of incorrectly planned cantilever bridges has been decreased. Most of the cantilever bridges are constructed correctly, at least two abutments support one pontic. The number of those cantilever bridges with one abutment and one pontic has been decreased, but it is still high. We have not found one abutment supporting two pontics, or two abutments suppporting two pontics. DR. V. TÓTH,1 DR. T. BERKI,2 DR. A. MUKICS,1 DR. Á. BÁN1 1 University Medical School of Pécs, Department of Dentistry, Hungary;2 University Medical School of Pécs, Department of Immunology and Biotechnology, Hungary DETECTION OF INFLAMMATORY CYTOKINES BY MULTIPLEX BEAD ARRAY (CBA) METHOD AFTER AND BEFORE PERIODONTAL TREATMENT A new challenging task in the field of periodontology is to disclose the suspected background mechanisms that are responsible for the general health risks in case of periodontal destruction. For instance, without any bacterial contamination inflammatory processes could be detected in the intima of blood vessels in early stage of atherosclerosis. These mechanisms could be triggered by inflammatory cytokines establishing the basis of a later atherosclerotic degeneration resulting in a late severe vascular damage. Establishing the diagnosis of this type of chronic infection by monitoring the level of systemic inflammatory markers in the sera was intended by several studies, but failed to confirm this presumption. It seems to be worth determining the interleukine production propensity of the main inflammatory cell types of the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Aim of the study: Simultaneous detection of IL-1 b, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70 and TNF-a production of LPS stimulated monocytes and PMA/ionomycin induced T lymphocytes by CBA method in patients with periodontitis gravis. Two assays were carried out: first before the beginning of the periodontal treatment and then 6 weeks after the completion of the treatment. The further periodontal indexes were recorded: bleeding on probing (BOP), periodontal pocket depth (PPD), gum recession (R), tooth mobility (M), and furcation involvement (F). Results: A slight but not remarkable increase of cytokine production was detected with CBA method in the cases of periodontitis patients. Only the IL-6 production showed significant decrease 6 weeks after the periodontal treatment completion. Some consequent rise in the macrophage cytokine production was demonstrated by the present study. Whilst the time span of the periodontal disease of patients involved in the study must be different, it could be concluded that the slightly increased cytokine production could be elicited during the whole disease process, it was noteworthy that only the IL-6 production showed remarkable decrease after 6 weeks the periodontal therapy. DR. ZS. TÓTH Oral S&D Health Service Ltd., Szentes PREPARATION OF IMMEDIATE DENTURES BY MEANS OF INSERTION OF ORTOPLANT® IMPLANTS Preparation of immediate dentures after implantation might provoke difficulties so for the dentist as for the patient. Aiming to avoid an immediate functional load of the implant by a suprastructure we elaborated a method which has been applied for a year now successfully in everyday practice for support and retention of immediate dentures. Material and method: In 2004 we developed and launched our implants under the name of ORTHOPLANT®. This development originally served orthodontic purposes. The ORTHOPLANT® implants are special pin-implants of a smooth surface and a screwed end. Its material is of a high purity stainless steel. Thanks to its surface properties it does not osseo-integrate during its stay in the bone-tissue so it can be easily removed. We recommend its application first of all in cases of lacking teeth falling into class II and III. ORTHOPLANT® implants can be set between or beside one-stage or two-stage titanium implants. If connected with natural dents 1 or 2 of it is needed, if applied alone, you need 3-5 of them for support and retention of immediate dentures. Results: During the last year we have inserted to 24 patients altogether 67 ORTHOPLANT® implants to provide support and retention of immediate dentures. Within one or two days
