• a dohányzási szokások, főként a cigarettázás epidemiológiai mutatói a közép-európai országokban meredeken emelkednek,

• ezekben az országokban a száj-garatüregi rákok morbiditása és mortalitása mind férfiaknál, mind nőknél a legmagasabb,

• a leukoplakiás csoportokban a dohányosok aránya magas, és összefüggést mutatott a leukoplakia lokalizációjával,

• keresztmetszeti vizsgálatokkal a leukoplakia magasabb arányban mutatható ki dohányosoknál, mint nem dohányosoknál,

• dózis-hatás összefüggés mutatható ki a dohányzás és a leukoplakia között,

• az intervenciós vizsgálatok adatai szerint a dohányzás abbahagyása után a szájüregi leukoplakia viszszafejlődhet.
