Korábbi országos, reprezentatív felmérés adatai [11] is bizonyítják, hogy hazánkban az ezer lakosra jutó évi fogeltávolítások száma - európai összehasonlításban - igen magas, és 60 éves kor alatt a fogeltávolítások vezető oka a fogszuvasodás.

Az általunk alkalmazott módszerrel végzett felmérések tanúsága szerint Európában a gyökértömött fogak az összes fog 2,5-5,6%-a. A gyökértömött fogak kb. 40%-a periapicalis pathosist mutat [3, 9, 14]. Saját eredményeink megegyeznek az európai adatokkal [7, 8, 12]. A gyökértömött fogak csúcsánál 40%-ban megtalálható periapicalis elváltozás arra enged következtetni, hogy vagy nem sikerült meggyógyítani a meglévő periapikális elváltozást, vagy a laesio a szakszerűtlen kezelés eredményeként jött létre.
