4 FÁKLYALÁNG HUNGARIAN NATIONAL GUARDS (The National Guard is made up primarily of those people who had taken arms and actively participated in the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight of October-November 1956. The news of their heroism has aroused and amazed the freedom-loving people all over the world. The Hungarian freedom fighters who had taken arms against Communism and Soviet colonial oppression in 1956, and who now live in the free world, are rallying, almost without exception, in the Hungarian Freedom Fighter World Federation (Nem-It was 15 years ago that the world famous Revolution and Freedom Fight has begun. It had shaken the Communist world and the consequences still being felt. The deed of the Hungarian people had found its place among the great events of history. The real Hungarian freedom fighters, seeing that further resistance inside the country would do nothing but further aggravate the situation of the people, left their fatherland in order to continue their struggle from outside and also to keep alive the flickering flame of freedom in the heart of our people. Another reason for their seeking asylum in the free world was to serve as the representatives and defenders of the interests of our people now suffering under Soviet and Communist oppression. Following our traditions, we have not selected the easy and confortable road to success. We have embarked on a road that is full of obstacles and difficulties, and, being frank about it, also full of intrigues. This was decided so because we had intended to preserve our independence, since only complete independence could assure the fulfillment of our sublime goals: the restoration of freedom to the people and independence to the country. We had taken up arms in 1956 because of the unbearable burden of our people. We were fighting not with words in secure offices: we were fighting and tens of thousands of our fellow freedom fighters also died with arms in hand to regain our people’s freedom. We are continuing our honest and uncompromising fight also in exile where our bitterest enemies are the pseudo-freedom fighters who had no guts to the scenes of real fightings in 1956. Since they have nothing else to substantiate their claims to be Hungarian freedom fighters, they outdo themselves by resorting to loud self-propaganda, and to deceiving foreign governments, their officials and other dignitaries. No wonder that our struggle in exile is as difficult as that against the might of the oppressors at home in 1956. Scientific and technical developments of the recent decades demonstrated that the world is indeed small and that it is indivisible. We believe, therefore, that the peace, and the security of manzetor). Among them are, for example, the legendary Pongratz brothers, including Odon Pongratz, who was elected to the five-member Armed Forces Committee, the Supreme body of all revolutionary organizations operating in Hungary in 1956. Today, Gergely Pongratz is the Chairman of the Federation and also Commander of the National Guard.) kind are also indivisible, i.e., universal. We also believe, that by wholeheartedly and uncompromisingly fighting for the safeguarding of the interests of the silenced and oppressed Hungarian people, we honestly serve the cause of mankind. This means, in effect, that we do not serve group or individual interests, and any group or individual interests that do not safeguard the interests of the Hungarian people are alien to us and are also alien to those freedom loving countries that embraced us and gave us haven after the crushing of our resistance at home. What we are fighting for is nothing else than to implement in our country the same freedoms any citizen in this country enjoys or can enjoy. Anyone fighting for such a purpose cannot be but a faithful servant of the cause of freedom in this country or in any other. The pseudo-freedom fighters, who cannot offer anything but lies about their backgrounds, join any grouping or group of interests, to promote themselves - in lieu of devoting themselves to the cause of freedom of all peoples. Those who do not fight for the freedom of our people at home become servants and are not freedom fighters. Unfortunately, many of the pseudo-freedom fighters, using their extremely keen sense of adaptation, misusing the memory of our fallen fellow freedom fighters, organize so-called commemorations. It seems that those who had failed to show their solidarity with the freedom fighters during the actual fightings in our country in 1956, try to make up for it 15 years after in the security of the free world. It seems to be in vain to appeal to those who misuse the name of freedom fighters to halt their improper activities and practices. It seems to be also in vain to appeal to the authorities in the various countries to check on the real background of those whom they embrace as the representatives and spokesmen of the Hungarian freedom fighters, and whom they lavish with their seemingly unlimited material aid. All we can do is to raise our voices; the voices of true freedom fighters, the voices of (continued on page 12)
