40 FÁKLYALÁNG 'HlCniíeö -2>iale* itenale August 17, 1966 Mr. Ernő Hoka Secretary General Hungarian Freedom Fighters Federation, Inc. 6629 Broadway, Apt. 7-R New York 7., N. Y. Dear Mr. Hoka: It is a pleasure for me to be a sponsor of the celebration commemorating the Tenth Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight. Unfortunately, I cannot find among the files my statement on the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. At the time, I was a member of the U. S. House of Representatives, and the statement may have been lost in transit. Here is my statement on your tenth anniversary: "I am thoroughly in favor of any occasion that serves to remind the world of the great injustice that was perpetrated on the Hungarian people ten years ago. Hungary, today, is a nation without a heart. Those who most loved their nation, if able, left their native land to be scattered to the four corners of the earth. They knew that the hardships and loneliness of the expatriate awaited them, but they preferred to start anew rather than to continue living in chains. 'Ten years have past. Most of the exiles now live a comfortable, settled life as useful members of their adopted lands. However, the love of one's native land has not died. For all the comforts of life in our free society, the expatriate Hungarian cannot forget the plight of the millions of his countrymen who remain to bear the burden of the regime that has been forced upon them. THE SPRINGTIME OF FREEDOM In this century man has witnessad many miracles. We are hurling ourselves toward the moon and exploring the depths of the sea. The world is bound together tightly with the sinews of communications and transportation. Yet amidst all these marvels one event stands out that can never be overshadowed — the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Wa will never forget that autumn of ten years ago, for in that moment thousands of Hungarian patriots exposed the myth that communism had tried to foist upon the world. After engulfing the states of Eastern Europe after World War II, the Russians had tried to convince the world that the peoples they ruled were content with their lots. Yet the very people cultivated most carefully by the oppressive regime flung themselves into the vanguard of the revolution. The Communists had offered honors and money to the intellectuals. Yet from the intellectuals came eloquent and total denunciation of the Communist system. The regime had claimed that it was governing in the name of the workers of Hungary. Yet the workers were among the first to attack the hated secret police, often with their fists and makeshift weapons. And perhaps most startling of all were the actions of the young people. To them the regime had preached ceaselessly the joys and wonder of the Communist system. "Marxism is the wave of the future," the leaders had declared. Yet it was the young, many of whom could not remember what it meant to be free, who threw themselves before Russian tanks. © PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUIIIC OF CHINA TO THE UNITED NATIONS 201 EAST FORTY-SECOND STREET 3| August 1966 Dear Mr. Hoka, I acknowledge with appreciation the receipt of your letter of 15 July 1966, with which Is enclosed the text of the closing resolution of the Hungarian Freedom Fighters Federations' Sixth National Congress and Theoretical Applicatory Conference of Hungarian Freedom Fighters World Parliament. In accordance with your request, I am forwarding herewith a number of statements which my colleagues, the late TIngfu F. Tslang and Dr. C. M. Chang and I made at the United Nations on the question of Hungary, together with a copy of the message which President Chiang Kai-shek sent to your organization on the fourth anniversary of the Hungarian revolution. May I leave the selection and editing to your discretion. I take pleasure also In sending you herewith a statement on the tenth anniversary, as you so kindly suggested. As to the commemorative banquet, you will perhaps agree with me that It would be advisable not to include me on the list of sponsors. Ü o •I LRS-2 The Hungarian patriots who flung themselves before Russian bullets and tanks were delivering a costly message to the peoples of the earth. By their deeds they destroyed all the senseless propaganda foisted upon mankind by the Communists. In the courtroom of world opinion the Russians stood exposed as the relentless, cruel tyrants that they arel We who watched those events prayed for the success of the heroic Hungarian people. Yet in the end the brute physical force of the Russian arsenal crushed those courageous people! By the end of November 1956, the silence of a near-graveyard had descended upon Hungary. Her valiant children lay felled by Russian might. Her intellectuals had been silenced. The workers had been defeated. By December the deep snows of winter and of totalitarianism had descended. Yet within the cold Hungarian soil lay springtime's promise. And within the hearts of the Hungarian people still lies the promise of a future when they will take their proud place among free men. Within the hearts of the peoples of the world lies the sacred memory of the sacrifices of Hungary's children. With all our hearts we pray for that springtime of freedom! MESSAGE BY AMBASSADOR LIU CHIEH, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CHINA TO THE UNITED NATIONS, ON THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION Today we are commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Hungarian revolution. We are doing so In the conviction that the cause of freedom, which suffered a setback ten years ago, Is not lost. 1 am sure that the Hungarian people, traditionally proud and courageous, will never accept alien domination and will continue to struggle until freedom Is triumphant. As we contemplate on the state of world affairs today, we cannot but note that there are writers and Intellectuals who think that the peoples behind the Iron and bamboo curtains have accepted the status quo and are living, not too unhappily, under the existing tyrannical regimes. They have forgotten the Hungarian uprising and the lesson derived from that historic event. And that lesson Is: No people will accept slavery and servitude In perpetuity, and no regime that deprives Its people of their rights and freedoms can long endure. It may be recalled that the Legislative Yuan of the Republic of China adopted a resolution on 6 November 1956, which condemned the aggression of the Soviet Union against Hungary, demanded the immediate withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary, and urged an International guarantee of Hungary's Independence and freedom. That resolution was and remains an expression of the sentiments of all freedom-loving Chinese with regard to the situation In Hungary. On this occasion, I wish to join In paying homage to the Hungarian freedom fighters - those who fell martyred on the streets of Budapest as well as those who have been carrying on the heroic struggle for a free Hungary.
