In the decade that has passed THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT GALLANT EFFORT FOR LIBERTY HAS NOT DIMINISHED IN THE SLIGHTEST. ITS SIGNIFICANCE HAS GROWN STEADILY. WHEREAS: the Hungarian fiohters for freedom WERE CHIEFLY YOUNG PEOPLE, MANY OF HIOH SCHOOL AGE. They fouoht with heroism and tenacity, and it took Soviet battle veterans equipped with the most modern OF WEAPONS TO DEFEAT THEM. WHEREAS: reprisals against the Hungarians were characteristically ruthless. Hundreds of teen age boys were kept in prison until they were 18 YEARS OF AOE, THE LEGAL AGE OF EXECUTION. EXACTLY HOW MANY OF THEM WERE KILLED AFTER TWO TO THREE YEARS IN PRISON WE DO NOT KNOW, BUT THE FACTS ABOUT MORE THAN A SCORE OF SUCH CASES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED. WHEREAS: in the minds of all free and decent PEOPLE, THE HORROR OF THIS AFFAIR REMAINS UNABATED. IT IS FITTING THAT WE COMMEMORATE THE VALOR OF THE Hungarians, young and old, who risked everything to TRY FOR LIBERTY. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Daniel J. Your striking material, and the problems posed, and the situations outlined have caused me great concern. There is an uncomfortable feeling aroused thereby and the belief that so long as there are people deprived of human rights and liberties, no one can really possess freedom absolutely. I congratulate you for tenacity and continuing efforts. Expressions through resolutions and proclamations may bring comfort and such I certainly do not wish to withhold. Enclosed is a copy of my production along this line. It was produced from your material and a direct solicitation of Mayor Cavanagh of Detroit. I will be happy if it meets with your approval and if it causes others to think about the untenable position of the people of your fatherland. Another Mayor was here in 1956, and I can find no expressions of that day to forward as you request. The only present one I can make is this letter and the proclamation and the additional thought that human rights and liberties cannot permanently be withheld from any people. I am struck with horror at the knowledge you. and yours have been oppressed so terribly and so fully. A brighter dawn must come to your beloved country, and we know it is aborning right now. I suffer with you as long as it is denied to you and yours, and wish there were more direct means with which to alleviate the inequities. Very truly yours,-Ellis B. Arnold, Mayor. WESTERN UNION.
