Erika Karbach THE THIRTY-YEAR-OLD SOCIOLOGICAL COLLECTION OF THE METROPOLITAN ERVIN SZABÓ LIBRARY /1973-2003/ Brief Historic Outline and Plans for the Future The Sociological Collection of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library celebrated the 30th anniversary of its foundation in 2003. This study gives a brief outline of its history and main activities. The history of the library has been interweaving with that of the Hungarian sociology since the very beginnings. It was Ervin Szabó, the first director of the library and the pioneer of the Hungarian sociology who formed the characteristic sociological feature of the collection. In the 70s the transformation of the library system took place together with the reinstitutionalization of the Hungarian sociology as a result of which the Library Act of 1976 designated the Central Library to be the national resource library of sociology. This activity circle remained unchanged in the Act of 1997 about the library supply. On 1st July 1973 the Sociological documentary department came into being in the Central Library which is known as the Sociological Collection now. The years of the 70s passed off with setting up sociological bibliographies. It was the time when the large- scaled bibliographical series on the resources of the Hungarian sociology (Magyar szociológiai irodalom bibliográfiája) started and in 1972 the Sociological Information (Szociológiai Információ) was published for the first time - its latest printed version appeared in 1989. In the 80s, by the widespread of IT the bibliography was processed into a database, and later, between 1998 and 2001 as a result of further development it was issued on CD-ROM as well, which has been updated regularly since then. The latest CD- ROM issued as a token of honors for the Millennium contains 100 000 data representing the results of the last 30 years of the Hungarian sociology. The website of the library was renewed in 2004 and under the name of SzocioWeb the continually updated version of the sociological database can be accessed which is the only comprehensive one in the fields of social sciences. It was the very end of the 20th century when the reconstruction of the Central Library building and its IT development took place. As a result of this work a reading-room with 8 000 volumes and another one with 200 different kinds of Hungarian and foreign periodicals welcome the readers who show an interest in sociology and whose number has multiplied in the renewed library since then. The most important Hungarian and foreign databases have gradually become accessible on the internet (CSA - Sociological Abstracts, IBBS, Web of Science, SSCI, EBSCO). We started digitizing in 2003 to protect both the sociological collection and the sociological heritage. Since that time we have been working for the Hungarian Digital Archives of Social Sciences which is a part of the National Digital Archives. In accordance with the future plans of the Central Library we have already started to define our strategic plans and aims for the years of 2003-2007 including the new rulebook of the collecting work and the new digital scheme. 194
