ABSTRACTS IN ENGLISH Papp István: Renewing the building of the Central Library of the Metropolitan Szabó Ervin Library After reviewing the former homes of the Central Library of the Metropolitan Szabó Ervin Library the essay describes the former, unrealised plans for accommodating the library constantly struggling with space problems. At last, taking into account the realities, the Library decided to solve these problems by enlarging, rebuilding and restoring its existing buildings instead of raising a new one. This was made feasible by having located certain functions in other buildings. Although instead of the earlier envisaged 25,000 sq.m only 17-18,000 sq.m will be available (12-13,000 in the complex consisting of the Wenckheim palace and two adjacent buildings), this space seems to be sufficient with a view to the Budapest library situation and the changes in library technology. Architectural planning has been based on thorough library-professional preparations. The essay finishes by a review of the concept and of the plans by the architect, Mr. Péter Hegedűs. Construction works started in autumn 1998 and will have been finished by end-2001. Gócza Júlia: The Music Collection in its new home The General Assembly of Budapest took a decision in 1995 to transfer the Pálffy Palace (4, Ötpacsirta Street) for use to the Metropolitan Szabó Ervin Library. The management of the Library has accommodated the Music Collection and the Finances Directorate in this building. The Music Collection was opened in October 1998 in its new home. In the rooms in the 1st and 2nd floors of the Pálffy Palace the collection was granted about 1300 sq.m of floor space instead of the 342 sq.m in its former home at Fehérhajó Street. The first floor houses the reference collection, the handbooks and journals, the second floor - the circulation collection (notes, books, video recordings, CDs). The new environment made an expansion of services and placing a major part of the collection on open shelves feasible. The Music Collection’s OP AC includes the entire book holdings, and - for the time being - the new acquisitions of sound recordings and notes. In 1998 the Library was granted the Japanese Government Aid to equip the Music Collection with modem technology. In 1999 the fifm Sony provided audiovisual tools for the Collection’s sound collection. The Music Collection serves as a venue for a variety of cultural events. The festive room in the first floor decorated with Venice mirrors is used for chamber concerts, while the arched room in the basement is used for lectures on music history, presentations of records and for exhibitions. The reconstruction of the Palace has been managed by Mr. Péter Hegedűs, he restored the building according to the drawings of Miklós Ybl. The stylish furniture was designed by Mr. Mihály Hefkó. The rooms are decorated with works of art borrowed from the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of the History of Budapest. Pauza István: The first steps on the way to the reconstruction of the Wenckheim Palace It was a significant pre-condition of the reconstruction and extension of the Central Library of the Metropolitan Szabó Ervin Library’s building that certain functions be accommodated in other buildings. The article deals with the construction and investments issues of the purpose-built Service Building and the renewed Pálffy Palace, with illustrations of the essential data and floor plans. 193
