8 SUMMARY STATEMENTS ABOUT THE MUNICIPAL SZABÓ ERVIN LIBRARY Year of foundation: 1895. The chief stages in the development of the Library. 1904 March. The Municipal Council elects Ervin Szabó to the newly created position of librarian. Till 1904 the Library (then called Municipal Library) was an official special library, administered from 1895 till 1903 by the chief archivist, from 1903 till 1911 by the Director of the Municipal Bureau of Statistic. The Library was opened for tire public on October 15th 1904. 1907 The quarterly entitled : »The Report of the Municipal Library« appeared first. 1911 The General Assembly of the City decided to develop the Library to a public library with scientific central library and a net of educational branch libraries. Its organisation was separated from that of the Bureau of Statistic. It got an independent locality in the Town Hall on the first floor of the wing facing Károly körút (now Somogyi Béla út). Its director became Ervin Szabó. 1914 At the end of the year, 4 branch libraries were open, directed by the central library. In the same year, the Library was removed to its still temporary, however more spacious locality in the school in No 8 gr. Károlyi u. 1918 Six branch libraries are working. 1931 The Library moved in his present localitiesto the Wenckheim Palace (No 1. Reviczky-u.) with the stock of the central library and the central bureau for providing the branches. 1944 In December, 13 branches are working. 1946 December 31st. 14 branch libraries and 3 travelling libraries on trams belong to the net. The General Assembly named the Library after its meritorious organiser Municipal Szabó Ervin Library. According to the Regulation No. 383/1925. kgy. of the year 1925 the central library collects books on social science and the so-called humanistic sciences. It tries to possess a complete collection on local government, of the »Budapestinensia« material. Of the chief branches of natural science, it collects only the basic works important for the development of this sciences. Of the chief branches of useful arts and sciences, collects only the fundamental works in connection with city administration. The development of the Stock.
