• BANATER SCHICKSALE IM ERSTEN WELTKRIEG • DESTINIES IN BANAT DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR The Legacy of Fábián Ernő and Bayer Irén The Great War morphed and changed countless lives, including the Fábián household from Magyarcsernye. At the outbreak of the War, Ernő Fábián was recruited by the Austro-Hungarian forces as a military medic, while his fiancé Irén Bayer - born in Zsombolya - worked as a nurse aid in several military medical facilities. Ernő Fábián chronicled his journey through difficult and joyous times during the first World War in two military journals. Accompanied by a rich collection of photographs, which he took in the medical facilities as well as on the battlefront, the countless letters and postcards saved from this period undoubtedly added to the richness of the chronicles. These items all add to the abundant story of Ernő Fábián and Irén Bayer’s destiny, which had a deeply human trait: both dedicated themselves to saving the lives of military personnel and healing the sick. In 1917 the Red Cross recognized Ernő Fábián’s dedicated work and honored him with a diploma. The records kept by the family are unique for the Banat region, given that the facts recorded in the journals are accompanied by letters and postcards, which Ernő Fábián sent to his family and fiancé, and also by the valuable amateur photographs taken by him. The above mentioned items paint a very realistic picture of the daily life and significant events during the War. After the War ended, Ernő Fábián continued his valued medical career in Magyarcsernye. He was regarded as one of the most famous, cherished and well-respected member of the community - not only in Magyarcsernye, but due to his wife in Zsombolya and throughout the entire domain of the noble Csekonics family, too. t 191 >
