1999. október 9. oldal Trinity was getting more difficult and, finally in January of 1997, transferred their church membership to Westwood where they could participate in evening activities in addition to daytime ones. The education wing of the building was still just a big open space. Much of the work to complete it was done by vol­unteer labor. Many times, Bill was part of the work crew painting walls, staining doors, and washing windows. By the fall of 1997, the Sunday School class­rooms were ready. The task of furnish­ing and equipping the facility is on-going. Westwood is a church with a mission in both the community and abroad. Bill and Joyce are happy to be a part of a lov­ing, caring church family. “Balazs” — “Bill” — “William” — and Joyce are justly proud that their sons, together with their families, are ac­tive in churches where they live. Each of the boys is a Music Director—Leslie in Naugatuck, CT, David in Downers Grove, IL, and Larry in Raleigh. They are not ordained ministers but each has, on occasion, stood in the pulpit to preach and/or do the children’s sermon. This article was written by Joyce Molnár as a tribute to the man who has been her loving husband for fifty-five years. Together, they are grateful to God for His marvelous grace and good­ness throughout these many years. Celebrate the Shepherd A pastor explains why our clergy leaders need our appreciation and en­couragement. EVERY SUNDAY AFTERNOON THIS FALL A SCENE WILL BE re­peated. A football team will play to a packed stadium. Everyone will watch a quarterback throw the ball to a receiver, who will score a touchdown, and the people will jump to their feet to cele­brate. AND EVERY SUNDAY MOR­NING in America a gifted pastor stands in a pulpit and preaches his heart out. Then he waits for a word of encourage­ment, a sign that he matters to those in the pews. Often, it never comes. With an ache in his heart he goes home, wonder­ing why no one came to celebrate. So why celebrate the shepherd? Because pastors need physical support. I’m reminded of a shepherd named Mo­ses, who stood atop a hill with the staff of God in his hands. We read in Exodus 17:10-13 that Moses’ hands grew tired and became so heavy he couldn’t hold them up without the help of two men named Aaron and Hur, who held his hands steady until sunset. He needed the physical support of others to win the bat­tle. Why celebrate the shepherd? Because pastors need spiritual support. I read of another Shepherd, praying in a garden, whose burden was so heavy that an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him whose sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. I hear Him say to His friends, in Luke 22:46, “Why are you sleeping? . . . Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” He needed the spiritual support of his brethren, so He exhorted them to watch and pray. Why celebrate the shepherd? Because pastors need family support. I remember a shepherd who was called away from home and family at all hours of the day and night. He would faithfully go when called to minister to a person in a hospital bed, to a home in the midst of a family crisis. He visited those who were in chains. He fed the hungry. He helped the homeless. He practiced what he preached about the love and grace of Je­sus by being a doer of the Word. That shepherd seldom got the chance to go fishing, play ball or attend school events with his children. He would apol­ogize to his family for all the unseen hours that pastoral ministry required. His family was supported by loving church members who recognized the importance of what one man can do when his family is nurtured and cared for. That family was my family, and that shepherd was my father. He was and is my hero. And that’s why I raise my hands to celebrate the Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ and His gifts, His heart, mind and Spirit in you, our pas­tors. Layton Howerton, in Focus on the Family, September, 1999 Rose (Szabó) Vegso (1901-1998) Dear Friends, my mother Rose Vegso enjoyed the Gospel Messenger for many years and attended many Hungarian Baptist Conventions through past years - with Mr. & Mrs. Frank Ver. She passed away last December 29 and was buried one day before her 98th birthday - in Dayton, Ohio. She lived a good and full life. My father preceded her in 1986. Gordon tábornok, an­gol hadvezér, - XIX. sz. - írja nővérének: “Jót tesz az embernek elcsendesedni ... Lehetetlen Istennnek szavát meghallani folytonos látogatások forgatagában ... Kérdés, hogy fárasztó kötelességeink és szóharcaink mellől, mennyi időt vonunk el a magányosság meggazdagító ápo­lására?" A csend, lelkünk műhelye. Itt mennek eredőbe hitéletünk fájának a hajszálgyökerei ... A csendességben ismerjük fel gondviselő Atyánknak mély, leereszkedő lényét az emberi lélekhez is. Isten, a csendességben látogat meg bennünket. A csendesség imakamrájában világosan meglátjuk, miben áll a mi magasztos feladatunk. “Úgy fényljék a ti világosságotok az emberek előtt, hogy lássák a ti jócselekedeteiteket, és dicsőítsék a ti mennyei Atyátokat." (Máté 5:16). Akik nem engedik magukat a Szentlélek által az imakamrába vezetni, lelki betegséget kapnak. Azért legyünk mi a belső szobák hivő emberei; így leszünk a szobán kívül is igazán azok. A keresztyén gyülekezetek újjászületé­sének forrása is az imakamra. Itt tartjuk lelki életünket frissességben. Több meg­mentett emberi lélek tulajdonképpeni születő helye ez. Néhány hűséges, kitartó imádkozó csendes könnyei többet jelentenek, mint a sok hangos szó... A titkos kamrából ered az igazi biblia ismeret is. Ha valaki az Igét érteni akarja, akkor előbb komoly ima által kell abba behatolnia! Egy tapasztalt hívő így nyilat­kozott: “Akinek nincsen imakamrája, el fog bukni, ha még olyan tehetséges is, mint Salamon, vagy olyan bátor is, mint Dávid és olyan tüzes is, mint Péter...” Imádkozni annyit jelent: ásni, behatol­ni a mélységekbe, harcolni és győzni! Ezt tette Jézus a Gecsemánéban és végül is ki tudta mondani: “Atyám, ha lehetséges, távozzék el tőlem ez a pohár; mindazáltal ne úgy legyen, ahogyan én akarom, hanem amint Te. ” (Mt 26:39/b) Mi mindig azzal a tudattal és hittel menjünk az imakamránk­ba, hogy ott üdvözítőnk vár reánk! Lehet­nek olyan perceink, amikor minden más tevékenységünknél fontosabb az imakam­ránkban való kitartás... A sátán nagyon megtámadja azt, aki az imakamrában időzik, de legyőzni nem tudja. "Uram, adj nekünk oly szívet, mely készen áll, / Melynek imádatod kívánt dolog. / Miként rakott oltár tűzre vár, / Elég egy szikra - lángra gyűl s lobog." Lázi Sándor
