Egy szenvedő, halált ízlelő Messiás nem volt egy ke­csegtető gondolat. De erről beszélt a tanítványoknak Jézus. Ebből a háttérből megértjük a Zebe­­deus család problémáját. Ők az Úr Jé­zushoz csatlakoztak, mert nagy jövőt láttak előtte. Ők szerettek volna a pompában és a hatalomban osztozni. Jézus csak megpróbáltatást és szenve­dést ígér. És kijelenti az egyik legvi­tásabb törvényt az Isten országában. „Aki naggyá akar lenni közöttetek, az legyen szolgátok.” Olvastuk ezt már sokszor, de nem hisszük el. Legalább­is az életünk nem tanúskodik róla. Krisztus mint egy szolga-Messiás jött. Ezt be is bizonyította a kereszt­halálával. Persze a világ másképpen gondolko­zik. Az a nagy, aki sokaknak paran­csol. Az a híres, aki sok szolgát tud fogadni. Az a szerencsés, akinek senki­­sem dirigál. De a menny nagyjai azok, akik szolgálnak, mint Schweitzer Al­bert, az orvos misszionárius, és az em­berek figyelmét Krisztusra terelik. A keresztyén élet útja Jézus szerint ezeken az állomásokon megy keresz­tül: 1. A keskeny út Kálvárián, szenve­désen keresztül vezet. Bűnös világban élünk. Szenvedünk a bűn miatt, és a világ nem fogja elfogadni azokat, akik Krisztus szerint élnek. 2. A versengés megtagadása. A tár­sadalom mindent versengésen keresz­tül ítél. Kinek van több pénze, esze, jobb társadalmi helyzete, stb., ez dön­ti el az értéküket. A Biblia szerint szol­gálat dönti el az értékünket. 3. Ne felejtsd el a keserű poharat. János 13:2—17 Bretz Tivadar Praying Women I should give a longer and a more revealing title to this little article. “Pray­ing women and the beginning of the European Christian Mission” would be a more suitable title. The 13th and 14th verses of Acts 16th chapter in its simplicity and compactness is avoid­ing our notice. But look what hap­pened. There was a river outside the town of Filippi. This was a place “where prayer was wont to be made ” as the King James translation puts it. In to­day’s English it would read: where prayers were usually made. Why the riverside? Those praying people were Jews. Did they not have a building, a synagogue? The explanation for select­ing this place could be either that be­cause the group was small, they could not build a place for prayer. Another reason could have been that there was water for ritual purification. The main point is that those people mainly wom­en went there to pray. This fact throws a light on the nature of worship. Those women did not expect to hear a sermon, a scrip­tural explanation or songs. They were satisfied in their souls that when they prayed, they worshipped. They had communion with God. It was truly worship. As a woman I am happy to point out that this prayer-meeting-worship was attended, conducted and practiced by women. Luke does not mention that men were there. He simply wrote that Paul "spake unto the women which resorted hither. "It is difficult to imagine that Paul would speak to the women if men had been there. It was an acceptable worship. God blessed the prayer meeting and used those God fearing women to be the foundation of the European Christian Mission. We see how God is planning His work. He led Paul to the riverside; He used this faithful group ofpraying women to further His plan. God actual­ly prepared the way for the God News by Lydia, "whose heart the Lord opened. ” God opened the heart of Lydia, and as we read she opened her home for worshippers. The first Chris­tian church in Europe found place in her home. And perhaps she was the leader of that church also. Do we see the importance of that short passage in the Bible? Do we dis­cover God’s plan how He directed Paul at the proper time to the exact place where the seed of the Gospel could be sown and bring fruit? Do we note how God prepares the hearts of the people to receive the saving mes­sage? Do we realize that God could select an unusual place and appoint a woman to be the first European Chris­tian? What is the lesson for us? The lesson is that God can and will use us women if we keep near to Him in prayer, if we will take leadership in faithfulness. He still can open the hearts of some of us for His wonders to perform. Balogh Hajnal 1929 óta a chrischónai diakonissza otthon tagja­ként szolgált ápolónői minőségben 1987-ig, nyugalomba vonulásáig. Elköltözött nőtestvérünket sokan is­merték az Egyesült Államokban és Ka­nadában. Emlékét szeretettel őrzik. A Szentírásban említett nagy embe­rek jellemét egy mondatban így lehet leírni: Ismerték Istent és alázatosan meghajoltak előtte. R. Cecil
