FL 32905 The Marys (Second Part) In Acts 12:12 we read a seemingly insignificant sentence: “And he (Peter) came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.” The name of this Mary is mentioned only once in the New Testament, but in my estimation she belongs to the list of “Great Marys”. On the basis of more references it is an accepted fact that the Christians, during the years following the resurrection of our Lord, gatheredforfellowship and prayer in the house of Mary. When the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers of Christ, they were in all probability in Mary’s home. In Acts 1:15 we see a number 120 who as the followers of Christ met more than likely in the home of Mary. Mary must have had a large home and a big heart to give accommodation to the people of the Lord. We women realize what it means to receive a crowd several times a week, perhaps daily. Her large, beautiful home was offered to Christ and His disciples. She was not afraid of the dust the believers carried in from the dusty streets. She did not mind to bring to order the home following the fellowship supper. She must have done this service without complaint or grumbling. We conclude these facts by the evidence that Mary ’s son Mark became a follower of Christ, the fellow worker of Barnabas and Paul, and the writer of the first Gospel. A panting, complaining mother could not have had the saintly influence that she exerted on her son. The young Mark saw day after day in his mother a saint whose example he desired to follow. Mary’s name is in the New Testament only once, but that is enough to remember her as long as the Bible will be read, and no doubt she received her never perishing reward in heaven. * * & Another heroine of the Marys is the one whom the New Testament calls 4. oldal Elnök: Kish Ernőné Alelnök: Bíró Gyuláné Titkár: Ciraky Ernőné Pénztáros: Háló Barnabásné the Magdalena. According to this introduction of her by Luke (8:2) she was a devil ridden, wicked woman. According to Luke the Lord expelled seven devils. If we do not go further in the New Testament, it is not worth discussing her at all. But a miracle happened. We do not know how. We do not know if she requested a miracle. According to another description by Luke perhaps she was the one who went into the home of Simon, the Leper where Jesus was and anointed Him with expensive spices. The fact is that the Lord cleansed her and whom Jesus cleanses he or she is clean indeed. Her name is mentioned in the New Testament several times later as she joined the little group offollowers of the Lord. There are three beautiful reports about her activity as a cleansed and reformed woman. She was at the cross together with Mary the mother of Jesus when Jesus was crucified (John 19:25). On the first day she went to the grave car-Balimo Health Center A letter from your missionary, Ruth Wright Dear Friends, It has been my privilege to enjoy three good experiences in the past two months. The first was three weeks of intense study of the Gogodala Language. The second was the baptismal service for 12 people from our English Church. The witness of these brought four more to a commitment to Christ and another four desire to be baptized. All we can do is thank the Lord for what He has done and continues to do. The third privilege was the visit of my sister Esther, her husband “Skip” Rowe and two sons Tim and Brian. The long-anticipated moment arrived when their Air Nuigine plane landed in Port Moresby on July 19th. After a few hours of “catching up” in the guest house, the 4 of them slept for the next 15 hours straight. Travelling straight through from New York to Port Moresby was totally exhausting. I ar-1987. március 15. rying again expensive spices to anoint the body of Jesus (John 20:1). Then came the reward for her faithfulness. She was the first person who announced to the disciples and to the world that Christ arose. This is the greatest statement and announcement in Christianity, “Christ is risen. ” (Luke 24:10) Going back to the cross, we notice from the description the disciples fled. But this brave woman stood there ready to stand any mockery or hostility. Who was thinking about the Lord while He was in the grave? She got up early while it was yet dark, spent perhaps her last money for the spices, and went to the grave (Mark 16:1). Where. were the disciples. We do not know, but Mary was there. Is it not an almost anbeliveable event that a previously wicked devil ruled woman would have the great privilege of letting the whole world know the greatest news — Christ is risen! Mary Magdalene is my heroine. When the Lord rewards somebody, He rewards with divine riches. (To be continued) Ruby Udvarnoki ranged for us to travel for one week to the Highlands to visit three different tribal groups — the Hule, the Kubo, and the Kaluli. Many of the Highlands people wear their traditional dress, painted faces, grass skirts and srawflowers with wigs on their heads. Skip was involved in speaking on several occasions to student nurses, the English church, missionaries, Gogodola and K.ubo churches in which he was translated. Flying on small six passenger MAF planes still felt uneasy to them. At the writing of this letter my family are still here but will be leaving in 3 days. My title has been changed from matron to Director of Nurses. However, my work is the same, looking after and directing a staff of 33 trained medical workers and 36 nursing students. Thank you for your prayers, letters and support. I love my work here. Praise God, He is ever so faithful. Yours in Christ, Ruth Wright
