We are slowly but surely approaching that season of the year where all Christendom celebrates the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We have just celebrated Thanksgiving during which we, like all other people of our Nation, gave thanks to God for the many blessings that He had bestowed upon us throughout the past year. We at Bethesda feel that we have been especially blessed with joys in abundant measure. Our Home is well provided for the needs and comforts of our elderly residents. Although we cannot all boast of good health, we can boast about the patience and sustenance that God has meted out to us. Our youngest resident is almost sixty-seven and our oldest is almost 100. We thank God daily for giving us just one more day, for it is only strength for each day that we ask for. Most of our residents are reasonably healthy considering their ages. We do however, always have a few people who suffer from pain or loneliness. These few people are always in our prayers, just as I am sure that they are in your prayers.

Our day started with the reading of the 100th Psalm after our morning breakfast. Then at 10 a.m., many of our residents joined in a service of Thanksgiving in our Chapel. Dr. Biro’s message emphasized the need for all of us to be thankful in our land of plenty. Then followed our proverbial turkey dinner at which time most of our residents outdid themselves in eating more than was really necessary for any of us. In addition to the young and tender turkey, we also had turkey dressing, rutabaga, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, jello salad and homemade pumpkin pie. Each of us gave thanks in prayer and song for the blessings that had been granted to us. We all sang the favorite old time hymn, “We Gather Together to Ask the Lord’s Blessings”. We then asked each resident to pray silently for the special blessings that they had been granted throughout the year. It was a joy to stand in silence and hear the whispered prayers of our beloved loves ones.

which will be celebrated in just a few short weeks. Christmas here at Bethesda is always such a joyous occasion. Our Administrative Assistant, Jean Robinson, already has a full schedule of events for the month of December. Administrative Assistant Paul Vautrin, too is working hard to make our Home as festive looking as possible for this occasion. Since most all of our residents enjoy the food that we serve, our Administrative Assistant, Ethel Kish is also very busy preparing special menus for the Holiday Season. But, lest you think that it is only the physical body that we concern ourselves with, there are plans for spiritual “feasts” as well. We never fail to remember Him from whom all blessings flow.

Our winter guests are beginning to arrive, but will not be here in full strength until after the first of the year. It is sad for me to note that so many of our old timers are now too weak to travel and thus we will miss them during the winter months. Let us not forget them all in our daily prayers.

ÉN VAGYOK AZ ÚR

(Ésaiás 43:3)

Ézsaiás próféta könyvének 43. rész, 1 — 7 versig terjedő szövegéből két szó ötlik szembe: az egyik a szeretet, a másik pedig a félelem. Az természetesnek tűnik, hogy a félelem mindig kísérte Izráel népét, hiszen sokat szenvedtek úgy a pusztai vándorlás, mint az ígéret földjén való hódítás és település után is. Ezzel szemben miért hangsúlyozza úgy a próféta a szeretetet? Úgy tűnik ki a bibliai történelmi szövegekből, hogy a szeretet szűkén adódott, különösen a száműzetések idején. Ezért volt szükség arra, hogy Isten szeretetét hangsúlyozza ő az elcsüggedt népnek, hogy emlékeztesse őket arra, hogy Isten szeretet.

I. “En teremtettelek, az enyém vagy. ” Az Úr emlékezteti választott népét arra, hogy O a teremtő, védő, kísérő Istenük. O védte őket, amikor átkeltek a mély, félelmetes vizeken. Istennek nem közömbös az, hogy milyen lesz az ő sorsuk. Mivel Krisztusban a hivő keresztyének is “választott” néppé lettek, tehát mi se féljünk, mivel mi is az Övéi vagyunk. Nagy félelem csak akkor vehet erőt rajtunk, ha a szeretet lángja kialvóban van.

II. “Teremtő munkámat folytatom.” Isten alkotó munkája nem szűnt meg a világ teremtésével. Ő most is teremt, alkot új dolgokat, új helyzeteket, új lehetőségeket. Mivel Ő szeretet, tehát a természetéből származik az, hogy új és szép dolgokat hozzon létre (lásd: Ézs. 43:18), a mi életünkben is.

III. Isten hívó szava most is hangzik. Istenünk sokszor emberi eszközöket használ arra, hogy tervét véghez vigye. Alkalmakkor olyanokat is használ, akik nem hisznek Őbenne, akik ellenségei az Isten népének, mint például Cyrus perzsa király K.e. a 6. században. Ő természetes ellensége lehetett volna a száműzött népnek, de ehelyett Isten szabadító eszköze lett nekik.
