EVANGÉLIUMI HÍRNÖK 1974. október 1. 8. oldal JOHN GABOR DOBRA 1892—1974. Services for John Dobra, 81, of Hillsboro were Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Hillsboro. The Rev. Norman Nideng of the First Baptist Church officiated, assisted by the Rev. Don Baker of the Hinson Memorial Baptist Church. Interment was in Fir Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Dobra died Thursday at Tuality Community Hospital following a brief illness. The family suggests that memorials be made to the first Baptist Church Memorial Fund, in memory of John Dobra. TRIBUTE TO DAD by Frank E. Dobra and Ruth Dobra Ragsdale This past month, our Dad, who had walked with the Lord for 81 years, stepped into the presence of our blessed Savior. Although somewhat weary and tired from his earthly journey, our Savior beckoned him home and tenderly welcomed his servant to the place of eternal rest. We acknowledged his departure as a family and friends in a most memorable service in Hillsboro, Oregon, May 8, 1974 His History Dad was born on October 20, 1892 in a small rural village of Gyulavari, Hungary. Sixty-two years after leaving Hungary, he had a chance to visit his birthplace, and very little had changed. In 1908 he with his father, mother immigrated to the USA. They landed at New York, and went straight to Portland, Oregon by train. After homesteading in Oregon for a time, the family went to Cleveland, Ohio. In Ohio he married Julia Orbán on June 6, 1918. He farmed for a time, but during the depression lost his possessions including a grocery store. It was then that he purchased for $90 a used Model “A” Ford and a trailer, and he, with his wife and five children moved again to Oregon in 1936 where he lived the rest of his life. His Legacy Dad endows no chair in a university for he had very little opportunity for education himself. His learning brought him to an early understanding that he "fear of the Lord is the beginning of wishdom,” and that as we honor God, He honors us. Formal education was not a viable option for Dad, for family needs required his contribution to the family budget. That he did what he could with what he had is to his credit. And what opportunities he had for acquiring knowledge —he was thankful. Dad’s possessions which he acquired can best be judged by the words of the Lord who said that "a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.” For in Luke 12 Jesus points out, that the greatest possession which we can have in life is that trust and faith which is simple enough to believe that God is able to provide for all our needs. Dad was rich in both. Dad’s gifts to the world must be remembered in that he gave two sons in the cause of freedom during World War II. John, his oldest and namesake, went down with the USS Hornet, and Julius, his second son, was injured on the USS Tennesse and later died in the states. He gave to the community a wonderful family—at least we think so! For he leaves a faithful wife, Julia, to whom he had been married 56 years. She is also the loving mother to those of us her four remaining children. We all acknowledge with gratitude and praise to God his spiritual concern whereby at an early age we all came to know the Savior. By both precept and provision we were afforded the matchless spiritual instruction that relates all things to that which is eternal. Lastly, the two of us who are serving with our families under CBFMS, Frank E. Dobra in Mombasa, Kenya, and Ruth Dobra Ragsdale in Ivory Coast, want to acknowledge His Gift to the world through our mission society in giving us for missionary service. What a blessed memory we shall always have of our Dad to the peoples of the world, and we humbly thank God for him, and publicly, through this our letter ... ... pay him, our father, Tribute.
