Bless the Lord o my soul and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy." Bless the Lord, 0 my soul. Tell all the good things, sing all the praises you can, o my soul. So spoke David to his own self. No one can inspire a man as well as himself. And no inspiration is as effective as the self inspiration. It means that a man meditates about the goodness of the Lord, thinks about his own state and counts the Lord’s blessings one by one — and is ready to open his lips for praise. This praise of the Lord, of which David is speaking, is not a public praise, a public worship: it is an individual recognition what the Lord has done and it is a private personal thanksgiving. This is the purest worship we can think of: no formality, no superficial utterance of religious phrases, no lip service, and no hypocrisy. Worshipping and praising the Lord are solemn tasks that require all ability we have. Half hearted praise, shallow homage, hurried adoration point to a disrespectful soul and in such spiritual atmosphere there is definite harm done to the soul and insult committed against God. Full worship demands the whole man. There are at least two reasons why we should praise the Lord and bless His holy name. One is the "benefit” that He has bestowed upon us. Benefit — is a rich and beautiful word, it means good deed. In our context we discover two ways by which the "benefit” of the Lord is working: one is that God’s gift is good, it is a blessing, the other that is working for our own good. When we are so prone to remember evil deeds, setback — we should seek to do the more blessed thing: remembering the good deeds of God. It gives us a brighter, healthier outlook on life. When we count the benefits, we will have no time left to remember the setbacks. When we praise God for the many good deeds, we shall find less reason to complain about trouble and lament about bad fortunes. A happy mental disposition is a great blessing.
