The Russian Baptist visitors were the Rev. Alexei Bychkov, general secretary of the Russian Baptist Union; the Rev. Michael Zhidkov, pastor of the Baptist Church in Moscow; the Rev. Nikolai Melnikov, secretary of Baptists in the Ukraine; and Mrs. Klaudia Pillipuk, who represented the woman of the Baptist Union. The Romanian visitors were the Rev. Nicholae Covaci, president of the Baptist Union of Romania, and the Rev. Ioachim Tzunea. The Rev. Mr. Zhidkov, pastor of the Baptist Church in Moscow, described President Nixon’s visit to his church during the presidential visit to the Soviet Union in May. "People in the church were happy and excited when your president joined our service for 30 minutes,” the Rev. Mr. Zhidkov said. "It was a great honor that he came and worshiped with us like an ordinary worshiper. It gave us great satisfaction to have him with us, because in my country it is a common attitude that only old and ignorant people can believe in God.” Smiling, Mr. Zhidkov concluded, "Not only old and ignorant people, but presidents, too.” The Rev. Alexei Bychkov, general secretary of the Russian Baptists, told the American Baptist hosts that the people of the Soviet Union looked upon the agreements signed by President Nixon and Soviet leaders in May as "a political miracle.” • GREECE — "A few years ago I happened to listen to your religious programs. This information comes from Religious News Service in a story from Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. A daily newspaper in Bratislava has recently blasted the church in a series on "the destructive consequences of religion for human personality.” Prague radio has announced, "Your attitude will inevitably become anti-Communist if you cling to the church and support it.” According to Religious News Service, the various branches of Czechhoslovakia media have been ordered to propagate "anti-Communist enlightment,” particularly in schools. The Bratislava newspaper series claims that religion causes "inferiority complexes,” "stomachaches,” and "brain damage.” Communist leaders are worried about increases in church baptism, weddings, and funerals since 1966. In the Czech territory, the rise in these ceremonies is 34 per cent; in Slovakia, 50 per cent. About 75 per cent of Czechoslovakia is traditionally Roman Catholic. There are also long-established Protestant and Orthodox churches. The attacks on religion coincided with a crackdown on persons considered "enemies of the state.” As of mid-August, 46 persons have been jailed for alleged subversion.
