Béla 111, built in the XIII century. This as well as the chapel and the door of the latter are unequalled speci­mens of Roman architecture. The uninjured fresco-pain­tings are counted among the best trecento masterpieces. Especially noticeable are the paintings representing the 4 Sybils and the 4 prophets. From the chapel are opening: two side-niches. The corridor starting from the right niche is adorned by the paintings representing the four virtues. The outside walls and bastions as to be seen after excavation praise the greatnes and importance the fortress it had in by-gone times. The palace of the Prince Primate. Its greatest value consisits in the Christian Museum. The museum represents the most valued co.lection of the old Hungarian art of painting (XIV—XVI century). Of an extraordinary value is also the trecento-collection comprising 1234 pieces. A trecento-collection like this you do not find in Europe, except Italy. The most outstanding pieces of the mediaevel Hungarian collection are: the altar piece with the side wings, the work of Thomas Kolozsvary, (1427) and the four paitings of M. S. (1506) beiny the representants of Hungarian gothic painting and bearing with an European level. The halian col.ection is placed in the second hall. The most considerable masters are: Martini. Sano di Tiepro, Taddeo Gaddi Pincturicchio. The German hall (3rd hall) shows as the most outstanding masterpieces the paitings of Wohlgemuth, Hemessen, Maulpertsch. Great interest command among the objects of the museum the delft-series, the collection of boxes and the series containing the alturien pieces of porcellain and the gobelin series of the centuries XV—XVII. Among the Esztergom churches are worth mentioning the church in the inner town (built 1756—1761) on account of its baroque pulpit, its main altar carved from Sóskút carrara marble (by George Kiss) and the alfar piece, an excellent creation of John Vaszary. Other chur­ches worth mentioning are the baroque churches of the Franciscan order and parish church in the so called watertown as a third noticeable church is to be mentioned the St. Anne parish church. Among the public buildings are notable the town hall, the lower part of wich was once the residence of the famous Kurucz-generall Bottyán Vak, further the diözesan library with its 120.000 volumes. Of considerable value are the 3 Corvina and the Jordanszky codex. Esztergom as a summer resort-place and spa. Eszter­gom is one of the foremost bathing and recreation places owing to its healthy and pure air, its nice parks, promen­ades, the opportunity it offers for wonderful excursions. The bathing accomodations lie along the banks of the small Danube. There is the artesian St. Stephen bath with a temperatur of 29 degree of Celsius. Its chemical ingre­dients are: iron, sulphur, magnesium, radium and are great healing factors. The mineralwater is chiefly used against ailments of the nerves. Esztergom’s surroundings offer much opportunities for excursions; worth mentioning is the Vaskapu alpine refuge (about one hour from the Town) where accomodation is provided in summer and winter and also a buffet is maintained. This refuge has many rooms and also a common sleeping hall and enables a sojourn of a couple of days Other places of interest for tourists you will find in studyng the map.
