Erzsébet CSOMBOR SOLDIER'S CEMETERY IN ESZTERGOM After the issue of the October Diploma on October 20, 1860, the generál assembly of the County of Esztergom \*as reconstituted in December 1860. The new sub-prefect became Károly Palkovics of Szenkvicz, government commissioner in 1849, who, as early as in February 1861, had proposed that a sepulchral monument be raised over the common grave of the Hungárián and Austrian soldiers buried in the fields of Szentgyörgymező in the year 1849. The county supported the proposal and called for public contributions. The amount thus collected covered the costs of the monument that represented a dying hon, and somé funds were alsó set apart for the maintenance of the tomb. The soldier's cemetery became the final resting-place of such personahties as Bódog Bátori Schulz, generál of the Hungárián army, Károly Palkovics himself, and Géza Horváth of Tiborczegh, lieutenant of the 1" army corps in the war of independence. In compliance with the public desire, individual monuments were set up on the grave of the generál and the government commissioner. The soldier's cemetery was first in the charge of the county and later, following the unification of 1895, the task was transferred to the city of Esztergom. To the present day, the cemetery has remained a venerable and dignified place, the scene of the celebrations of March 15. 169
