György MAGYAR THE ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE PEDAGOGY OF MAJER ISTVÁN The outstandingly rich and profiting history of teachers-training in Esztergom reflects, clearly the struggle that had been fought by the best priests, educators of our country for the organised and methodical formation of teachers and for the physical education of youth. One of the most recognised of them was István Majer. It is important and worthy to make known of his manifold activities all that he did for the realisation and development of teachers training and physical education in schools.His vast culture and humanism, his experiences gained abroad and his good councils were planted with paternal care into the souls of his young students. In the education of the growing-up generations he definitely stood out for the parallel development of intellectual and physical strength, forces.From his pedagogical principles, views, councils and from his humán behaviour our contemporaries too can draw with great profit. This paper aims at sharing with contemporary educators the less known views of István Majer regarding physical education. 160
