is sent with a message to the world to repent of its sin and turn to Jesus Christ. One often notes the indistinctness of the line between the world and us Christians: we are so busy being like everybody else we have forgotten to be like Christ. A woman in this parish has recently gone forward a great stride in her spiritual life, and the old friends in her community are surprised and being to look askance. For years, she told me, she was trying to serve God and mammon, and now she lias come out and turned her back upon that old life. Do you think that her social friends like that? They do not. But I tell you, there is more Pentecost-Christianity in her today than there is in them. Many of them are church-members, but they block Pentecost for all that. The real and •committed Christians are not very many. The untouched, unreached pagans in the world about •are a great majority. What does that thought do to you, fill you with fear, or fill you with fight? The thing we need most in the modern world is a small military wedge of completely committed Christians let loose with all the fire and power and joy of Pentecost across the face of the jaded, pagan world in which we live. The problem of Pharisees within the church and pagans without is enough to make any earnest and robust Christian either quail with despair, or turn back to God with a deep prayer for a new Pentecost in our day.

Yes, Pentecost might happen again if we were •al as a church willing to fulfill the conditions. It might come if we worked and prayed for it hard enough. The Holy Spirit has fallen more than once in Christian history upon little groups of utterly •dedicated people. Sometimes I feel that our God is ready for a great out-pouring of the Spirit without measure upon the sons of men, but we are not ready. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth, and He will show us surely what manner of men we are. He is the spirit of illumination, and He will direct us in ways not always to our liking. He is the spirit of power, and He will sometimes grant His power solely upon the condition of our willingness to use it to His and not our glory. Pentecost stands to me for the unlimited possibilities of the Christian life. It was a social spiritual experience, in which willing and obediend idividuals ware lifted up far beyond their added individual spiritual powers, into a new power of combined spiritual experience and effort. Many of us will never touch the hem of the Pentecost experience because we are solitary Christians, because we are uncommitted Christians, and because we do not make any spiritual effort to reach others for Christ. But if we would all give »ourselves to Christ without reserve, put the

Kingdom first in our lives, and begin to share with the Christian fellowship what God asking Him to and then if we waited upon God asking Him to complete and fulfill our experience of Christ in the experience of the Holy Spirit, He might pour forth His Spirit upon us if it were His good pleasure.

God grant us to be ready, and then send down the fire! Amen.

NÉHÁNY SZÓ AZ IFJÚSÁGHOZ

Kedves Fiatal Barátaim!

Nagyon bölcs dolognak találom az ERŐS VÁR “Új Nemzedék” rovatát. Véleményem szerint ezen rovatnak kell hamarosan a legelevenebbé kifejlődnie a lapban.

Ki is az az ‘‘UJ NEMZEDÉK” ? Az uj nemzedék az az ifjúság, amelyik izmos vállaival keresi a helyet oly irányú érvényesülé'séhez, ahol szavával és cselekedetével irányitő lehet a társadalomban. Az uj nemzedék tehát ma még nem vezet, csak készül rá, hogy a ma élő vezetőknek a helyét átvegye s ő legyen a gondolkozó és vezető nemzet a jövőben. (The nation of the future.)

Micsoda széditően nagy dolgot jelent ez! Készülni arra, hogy egy nagy hajón Te leszel a kapitány, Ifjú Barátom! Ez a két szó “UJ NEMZEDÉK” azt jelenti, hogy minden fiú és leány egy-egy kapitány-jelölt (nominated Captain), aki arra vár, hogy átvegye a kormányrudat valahol, talán egy hányódó tenger közepén, vagy egy zátonyos, sziklás folyón. S mit jelent ez? Azt jelenti Fiatal Barátaim, hogy erre a nagy alkalomra nektek készen kell lennetek minden percben. Értenetek kell a hajó kormányzásához, mert különben elsülyed a hajó és ti lesztek felelősek a sok életért. Ifjú nemzedék vájjon tudod-e már, hogy kell kézbe venni a kormányrudat? Ugy-e nem! Pedig már egész biztosan beleszólt mindegyitek a világ folyásába s azt találta, hogy sok minden másként van, mint ahogy lenni kellene. Megmondtad-e azt is, hogy milyen lenne a világ' képe, ha annak formálása rajtad állana! Azt hiszem erre is csak azt felelnéd, hogy “ezen még nem gondolkoztam”.
